I chose to buy this and a cheap (£11) stand and how happy am I?
I am an amateur photographer, experimenting with portrait shots using a set of Cannon 580exII's off camera.
Having not seen the Lastolite this is only a speculation but I am SO impressed with the quality of this product I wouldn't be surprised if it was either a direct copy of the lastolite or made by the same company in China and just not badged as lastolite...
Whilst I don't necessarily agree with product fakes and copies, I also really object to being ripped off and the cost of the lastolite product, even allowing for R&D costs is a joke.
The softbox head its self is of excellent construction, lightweight and well made. It performs its function perfectly well. The outer white diffusion screen even has velcro on the outside which I assume means you can use the available grid ad-ons available for other higher priced units (although you would need to check this!
Taking note from other reviews that this is difficult to re-pack, when I opened and unfolded the softbox I watched how it opened and took a few moments to immediately close it and open it again, I now understand how to pack and unpack and didn't need videos or instructions. Please note, like modern hike tents this is made from sprung poles, so if you take it out of the carry bag and just let go it will spring open and as with one reviewer it will smack you in the face. Just take a moment to look at how you twist the short end (into a figure of eight) and fold in half and it all makes sense.Read more ›
If this equipment carried the Bowens or Lastolite brand, it would be seen as good value at double the price, so if you are looking for a portable lighting solution at a budget price, don't hesitate!
It is supplied in a neat pouch from which it springs upon removal and unfolds to become a strong and rigid soft box. The soft box is supplied with an inner diffuser which is attached by clips and an white outer diffuser which is simple to press onto the receiving velco on the inside edge soft box. The supplied bracket is simply pushed into the back of the soft box this bracket then slots on to the provided mount. The mount has a ball head to enable angling and cold shoe for sliding on a speedlight or flash trigger. Do make sure your speedlight is tightly attached, as this took me a couple of goes before I was confident that it was secure. Although no written instructions were supplied I worked out what goes where, although this was made a lot easier from watching a Youtube clip. If you havn't seen an assembled softbox at close quarters it may take a bit more puzzling out!
All in all I am thrilled with the quality of this product and the effect it gives portraits is very pleasing. I am happy to thoroughly recommend it.
If you want the flash head inside the softbox you need to reverse the flash head 90 degrees (lateral fitting) or 180 degrees (reverse the flash);Doing this you will be able to get a correct fit of the flash inside the softbox using any kind of trigger.
The quality of the product so far is very good and the pictures obtained with it lock great.
Overall it's a nice bit of kit to have, for ~ £50 delivered I can't complain at all, looks quite professional.
If you need instruction on how to set up the softbox just type "softox speadlight" in YouTube.
The fixings are all metal - I was expecting plastic at the price - and are very solid with a nice big solid ball joint to allow the box to rotate and tilt to pretty much any angle your stand can manage. The flash bracket takes both my smaller speedlight and my larger ones and is nicely adjustable. I have it with a wireless trigger fitted to the hotshoe of the speedlight and can still easily make the speedlight line up.
It isn't overly light, but it could be handheld by an assistant - although it would be better with a little grip handle.
The inner lining of the softbox is silver. It is very easy to put up, although getting the inner diffuser panel attachments could have been made easier, but at least once they are on it stays in place. The outer diffuser is held in place firmly with velcro.
The only downside I can think of is that unlike the Lastolite version, there isn't an optional grid you can buy for it, but I'm betting that the 54/60cm Lastolite version will fit with a bit of sticky velcro as the sides of the softbox overlap the front.

Fell apart when trying to collapse the light box as the springs that hold it open came apart. Now permanently set into place and no longer collapsible so defeats the object really!Published on 21 July 2014 by S. Little
Well made and good value soft-box for speed-light use, packs flat and feels well made.
Definitely worth the money, good control of light with this
