I have a real passion for coloured stones, and Newman's exotic gems series is a delight. Reliable information about coloured stones other than ruby, sapphire and emerald has been hard to come by or prohibitively expensive, so I am very glad of this series. I keep coming back to this book - and its successor, Exotic Gems v2.

I think Newman has done an excellent job of catering to both consumers and professionals. As a gemmologist I would have liked more photos of inclusions, clarity, colour, but as a realist I know that this would have raised the price too much, and might also have made the book too dense for the non-specialist. The gemmological information and the discussions of how to evaluate each stone are fascinating, useful, realistic and readable and there are plenty of references for further reaading.

Almost most wonderful - the photographs of stones and jewellery set with the stones. Almost equally wonderful - the sources of the photographs, often stone dealers or jewellery designers, whose websites have opened another world I hadn't yet found!

5.0 out of 5 stars Volume 1 of a 3 volumes, describing gems well and captivatingly 8 Jan. 2013
By Mark D. R. Stern - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
Renee Newman's book is well organized, researched and illustrated. Each gem is described scientifically as well as in a way accessible to the amateur gemologist. Extensive discussion is given to characteristics of any gem and its value, accompanied by illustrations. Only nine rare gems are actually covered in this volume, so much attention being given to each. The book is well organized with a table of contents, and an index. Even if you do not read the scientific descriptions, the brilliant color photographs make it hard to put down.
However, as volume 1 you need to buy volume 2 as well which has an additional 15 chapters on related gems. After I bought volume 1 and volume 2 of Newman's Exotic Gems, there were still some missing. I found this in her third book, Rare Gemstones, which covers more of the rare and newer gems gaining popularity.
Since buying them, I have never shelved them in my library but keep them out. I may not be able to afford the gems, but I can covet the gems and spend hours just looking at the illustrations.
But, lest you think they are coffee table picture books of gems, if I wanted to I could take the time to read the books and understand the characteristics that make these minerals gems.

4.0 out of 5 stars It has a good history behind each one 18 April 2015

This is a book that goes more into the history of gems, i.e. folklore. The interesting parts of each gem is the folklore associated with it. It has a good history behind each one. Satisfied with this author. Maybe another book for beginners with more detail???

3.0 out of 5 stars Useful but get a better editor. Several cut/paste errors not caught by copy editor. Sloppy. 29 Jan. 2016

Useful book, but I may be too close to the industry to appreciate it as much as deserved. My main complaint is that the book has sloppy editing.

Again a very well documented book by Renée Newman. I appreciate it very much and I would recommend it to everybody interested by more exotic gemstones.
