What I don't like is that it's been designed, on purpose, so that the modular accessories do not work in other modular power supplies, and their fables won't work on this.
Seems like someone gets a thrill out of the thought of thousands of incompatible cables failing to rot in landfill sites.
It is a good quality plug and play unit.
The disappointment I had is the 24-pin EATXPWR connector isn't in one piece but with one end 4-pin seaparated. That is an acceptable arrangement for the manufacturer to cater for a wider market. However the deatched 4-pin is poorly engineered and fabricated that it can be accidently reversed into the motherboard. A more positive arrangement is needed to prevent it from pluging in the wrong orientation which is curently possible as I did it myself. The detached 4-pin socket has square and semi-round inserts that can be still be inserted if rotated 180 degree. Normally PC components are engineered so that even an idiot cannot plug the wrong way.
Being modular, you only need to fit the leads that you actually need for what is in your PC. This can save space and make the installation more tidy. The main 24-pin cable was clearly much thicker than the old one, and less bendy. I don`t have any floppy drives so didn`t need a couple of the leads. I do have 2 DVD drives, a HDD, a SSD and extra cooling fans than run off the 4-pin SATA power leads, plus the NVIDIA GTX 970 needs n 8-pin power lead. There`s plenty of extra lead capacity for a second graphics card if you have one.
The Gold in the title refers to how efficient the power conversion is. I believe it has to achieve 92% of the input power getting to the components. This means it generates less heat than a Bronze-rated power supply, let alone one with no rating at all. This also means, as far as I can make out, that the full 650 watts is available on the main outputs to the motherboard, and presumably the graphics card. There`s plenty on the other outputs to run the drives.
I also immediately noted that the fan inside the power supply makes a lot less noise than the out-going failed one. The whole PC is quieter now, and more efficient, therefore also cheaper to run. Not having bundles of unconnected cables also makes it tidier: the spares are in the box in the loft. That`s another bonus, you might have spare cables. You get some Velcro cable ties in the box too.
There is also a switch on the power supply inside the PC for ECO mode. This will actually regulate the fan further to only use it when needed, which can make it run silently when it`s cool enough. My PC has a number of 120mm fans on the casing which is likely keeping the temperature down anyway, so I switched that to ECO after a while.
Whilst this power supply is not the cheapest, I chose it because of its reliability (based on other reviews), and also because it is more efficient. I have not had any issues with it at all, it`s worth spending that little bit extra for the quality on as vital a component as this.
Came well packaged from amazon and EVGA packaged it to the extreme, with nice thick foam packaging on all sides, a nice bag for all the unused cables to rest in and a high quality cardboard out box.
Would 100% recommend EVGA every time.
I no matter what i tried could not get my computer to boot, ( i know now that was the best possible outcome), the protection of the unit is outstanding I would have trashed 7 hard rives if the power had not been killed), it was as dead as a door nail and not nearly so useful, for two days i tried everything plugging in cables then removing them this caused sore fingers as they are are very tight and stiff which again is a good thing (for a one of job), anyway scoured the internet and came across old modular sata power cables do not work on different modular power supplies so strip all your old cables out and use the ones supplied with the new power supply another note of caution the reason i upgraded my xfx black edition 750 was since April i ran two gtx 1070s on a single vga cable from my power supply it had two perfect connectors on the end of it and saved space then two days ago the smell of burning i had damaged the power supplies socket vga socket and destroyed the cable, this is for people like me who aren't very experienced, always feed power hungry cards from separate sockets with their own cable. To cut to the chase great power supply for my sli rig just what it needed.
