ESET Smart Security V4 Overview
The Internet is a wonderful place for networking, searching for information and entertainment, but it is also where malicious software and other threats lurk. ESET Smart Security 4 keeps your PC safe with smart proactive detection that blocks most known and undiscovered threats hours or days faster than other Internet security technologies. Smart Security enhances your Internet experience without getting in the way.
Smarter Scanner – Threats don't always enter in ways you expect. ESET Smart Security inspects SSL-encrypted communication channels like HTTPS and POP3S, and intelligently scans compressed files to find threats that other products miss. ESET's Smart Optimisation feature makes file scanning faster than ever.
Time-saving Firewall – The new Learning Mode saves time by automatically creating firewall rules by observing how you use your computer, while offering advanced firewall modes for power users.
Upgraded Antispam – ESET Smart Security now takes care of annoying spam with a smaller, faster, and even more effective spam filter.
Removable Media Security – Threats can enter your PC from removable media such as USB thumb drives. For self-running media, ESET Smart Security scans autorun.inf and associated files when the medium is inserted, in addition to scanning any file on any removable device when it is accessed, or during a full-scan of the media. Power users can adjust ESET Smart Security to perform additional levels of scanning on removable media.
System Tools – ESET SysInspector and ESET SysRescue simplify diagnosing and cleaning of infected systems by allowing deep scans of system processes to find hidden threats, and creating bootable rescue CD/DVD or USB drives to help you repair an infected computer.
Self Defense – ESET Smart Security has built-in technology to prevent malicious software from corrupting or disabling it, so you can rest assured your system is always protected.
Many Usability Improvements – ESET Smart Security V4 has numerous speed, security and usability upgrades.
Energy-sipping battery mode extends laptop battery life without compromising security
Advanced Protection Status screen informs you of threat detections
Information pop-ups are hidden when running full screen applications like games, video players or presentations.
Password protection prevents ESET Smart Security from being uninstalled by strangers.
New interface and keyboard shortcuts simplify use for visually impaired users.

I felt it was about time to get a fully-fledged virus and firewall package and I had heard very good things about ESET NOD32 and after checking reviews and comparisons, it seems to get a good write up everywhere.
Uninstalled AVG and Spybot (after some issues with Spyboy leaving behind TeaTimer) and installed NOD32 and I have no complaints at all. I also found that the 'smart scan' I ran after installing Nod32 picked up two infected items which my previous AVG had not.
The intall process was easy enough and fairly quick, and updating the virus definitions was very quick. The entire interface is very easy to understand and offers both noob and advanced interface. You dont need to be that I.T knowhow to use this.
In the past I have used other pay-to-use anti viruses which have made huge demands on the computer resources (one reason i turned to free software like AVG) and I havent been impressed. But ESET loads very fast at startup and has very, very little impact on CPU and memory.
I would personally recommend getting the smart security, as it (currently) appears cheaper then the stand alone anti-virus and offers that and other facilities like a firewall too.
Like I say, im not virus expert and I know better then to check dodgey websites or open dodgey emails so I generally dont expose my computer to threats, but so far ESET is working a dream.
You will probably got to a lot of websites and find software like Norton or McAfee highly recommended, but that is primarily because these are well known, house-hold name. Also, a lot of other online stores ONLY sell Norton, McAfee and other well known names. Which is why they tend to be in the "top sellers list".
I was quite surprised at how it seems only Amazon sells ESET, while other online stores dont. This is why you won't find ESET on a lot of "top sellers list" because it isnt given the opportunity it should be and its not that well known outside of experts.
But ESET it worth a go and probably cheaper then the rest too.
The features are decidedly lacking compared to BitDefender as it does not have a defrag, tuneup, file shredder, etc etc etc (all of which you can get for free anyways).
The Registration was a tad basic but convoluted as you have to register on the ESET website to get your activation details whilst reading the warnings to remove ALL security software from your computer or it may not install properly. (I left Spybot and Spyware Blaster on my Vista laptop and it installed). The installation on my Win7 64-bit Computer took ages. I even went to hard shutdown the computer as I believed it had stalled but instead I left the computer whilst I went to bed and in the morning it was all installed correctly.
The ESET software proved it's worth in just one scan. It found 31 infected objects that Bitdefender missed on numerous occasions as well as a few in the Computer backup and I carry out a viral scan with anal regularity. I had an additional 3 which were false positives.
It took about a third less time to perform the scan in comparison to BitDefender, which is a welcome relief as it was a major drawback with performing a scan with that product. the time was halved with a quick scan but still required a good 4 hrs to even consider a BitDefender scan as being of any help.
Now of course this all depends on your system setup, software, hardware etc. and is primarily a comparison between Bitdefender Total Security 2010 and ESET Smart Security 4 though So far I must say I impressed with the efficiency of the ESET product and I'm not one to normally sing praises.
So all in all a good buy ;)
A big plus is the real time monitoring without the huge PC overhead of some others. So what that means is my whole families PC's are protected without any performance loss due to a greedy AV application running in the background.
Simple to install, simple to use and automatically updates four of five times a day to keep our systems at home safe and secure.
Downside is the silly practice of charging more to renew a product licence than it is is to buy new each time. So at the end of the years use instead of simply renewing I strongly suggest returning to Amazon and buying a new licence. Works out to be half the price of the renewal.
Great product and at the price I paid for it a bargain.
Nod32 has been consistently in the top ten AV programs for years, at times it was in the top 3, but now is around 6 out of 10, mainly because programs like Norton have cleaned up their act and is now a reasonable program. Value for money Nod32 is the best you can do unless comparing with free ones like AVG.
