5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent coming of age fantasy 23 July 2015

I really love YA fantasy novels. They often feature young people who are thrust into situations far beyond their understanding and we get to watch them grow and become larger than life. This is exactly what I experienced with author Sonja Wuthrich's "Elementary Virtue". The story of Gregory, an eighteen year old who just wants to have fun and finds out that that's not really on the menu as he is thrust into a mystical war. The budding relationship between Gregory and Leyla was one of the great features to this story and I am so thrilled to see that this is going to be a series. Definitely recommend.
5.0 out of 5 stars An exciting fantasy novel filled with unique characters and a story that kept me intrigued throughout 5 Jun. 2015

As a long time lover of fantasy set in a contemporary environment, I was referred to this novel by an associate at my book club. She is normally quite good and choosing the types of books that stand out from the standard fare and in this case she was spot on. I curled up to this novel over a rainy weekend on the coast and immediately fell for the primary protagonists Gregory and Leyla. This author does a bang up job creating multidimensional characters that transcend the standard fare caricatures that can plague books in this genre. These kids are quite layered and the more you get to know them as the plot progresses the more vivid the story becomes. Another aspect of the story that I like is the description and use of The Vultures; this clan made for a perfect foil and the intrigues surrounding their group was palpable and well fleshed out. Also, the utilization of the elemental abilities in this book was very well designed.

I was able to not only follow the story as if it could be real, but my suspension of disbelief naturally encircled me as I read on, hour after hour, unable to let up until the tale was over. I think this is another testament to the author’s skill: she adeptly writes a hero’s journey with an aplomb that you rarely see in so many books anymore. By the time I reached the ending, I was beside myself with the knowledge that this (spoiler alert) is going to be a series! If anyone else is looking for a stellar fantasy novel that will keep you enthralled through to the very last page, you’re definitely going to love this one; I know I did.
5.0 out of 5 stars Two multi-faceted young adults thrust into an unexpected mission... 4 Aug. 2016

Two multi-faceted young adults thrust into an unexpected mission, still developing themselves, and trying to discover who they are. Beyond your typical YA read, filled with lots of pop culture, modern age fads, and did I mention fantasy! A great combo, quite unique. It’s an accurate portrayal today's youth and you can certainly tell that the author’s daughter had a huge influence in her writing and was definitely the inspiration.

Firstly, focusing on one of the protagonists Leyla, the story shifts towards Gregory who draws in the fantasy aspect of the story, as we find out that he is the chosen one, the Savior of this special clan. I absolutely loved the characters, and it was entertaining watching them grow and develop throughout the plot. Young romance, modern age adventures, a great opening to a series that I’m sure will not disappoint.
5.0 out of 5 stars Normal Life? Not for Gregory! 28 Aug. 2015

Gregory wants to be normal. Normal teenage dreams, normal teenage family, normal teenage friends, and normal teenage life. The problem? He is a Savior. A Savior of this mystical clan who turn his "average" life upside down.

Sonja Wuthrich delivers an impactful story filled with adventure, magic, power, and even a little romance. I didn't know what to expect when I first looked at this book. As soon as the first page was turned, my eyes and perspective changed. I had fun reading about Gregory and hope to see him more in the future.
2.0 out of 5 stars Potentially a great book. 21 July 2015

Massive potential. Unfortunately the lack of editing made it almost impossible to get through. But get through it I did because it has worth. Clean it up and It would be great.
