Covering Yoshinkan Aikido by the founder, Gozo Shioda, I purchased it however because of the quality of photographs to help me with the basics of 'regular' Aikido for the beginner and it didn't disappoint. Covers history and fundamentals in a clear style. I think I will be referring to this book for a long time because it offers really clear direction and instruction. Great accompaniment to class.

the first book I bought on Aikido 20 years ago! a small handy book; good for beginners on the history, background and the fundamental concepts. Useful even if you are not a student of the Yoshinkan "style" of Aikido. recommended.

Yes, Gozo Shioda was a student of the founder of Aikido, and yes, he went on to found the Yoshinkan style of Aikido, but this isn't a great book (3* = OK). The photos and explanations are much less clear than most of the more recent books - Shioda's Total Aikido among them, which I would strongly recommend over this book. It must be remembered that this was one of the first Aikido books to be released, and there are now a lot of books out there with more photos and clearer explanations than this one. My advice - if you want a book about Yoshinkan Aikido, buy Total Aikido.

Not as complete as Total Aikido but does deals with the basic postures and stances, the fundamental techniques and applications. I liked the simplicity in the description of the basic controls and pins. Helpful for who is beginning to train in any school of aikido.

Gozo Shioda was the founder of the Yoshinkan school of Aikido and studied for many years directly under Morihei Ueshiba, founder of Aikido. This book gives the reader a good overview of the art, with easy to understand photo series that break the different techniques down into easily understood stages. I really like the photo series at the back of the book that demonstrate practical uses of Aikido for self-defense.

I bought this after Total Aikido and was mildly dissapointed. However, it is far better than the majority of Aikido books.Read more
