London 1940. A city of darkness, a city of blackout, where every night bombs fall from the sky. Amid the devastation of the war-torn capital, some children have fallen through the gaps. Homeless, lost – they take refuge below ground, in the tube network; they survive by coming together in an abandoned station, forging out a life, in a world beneath the world. Eleven-year-old Daniel discovers this magical, subterranean city of children; he shares in its wonders and dreams, making both friends and enemies along the way. But the existence of the children is both precarious and fragile. Some of them begin to disappear. Others are found dead – laid out on the tracks. The children whisper stories about a supernatural being haunting the tunnels. The question abides: Are they alone or is there something down in the darkness with them?

Review
‘McKenna tells the story of children who have taken over an abandoned station that a child named Georgie calls Ruritania. He has a very active imagination just like the author…While “The Dying Light” is by no stretch of the imagination a derivative novel, I could not help but think of two very different British classics while reading it: “Oliver Twist” and “Lord of the Flies”…While not on a desert island [the characters] are denizens of an underground world that relies on force to keep order, a form of social control that can easily turn into ritualized violence.
I was also reminded of Stephen King’s novels that frequently describe children up against supernatural forces that requires fearlessness and heroism to defeat. Georgie has become the prophet of impending doom from a monster that has been killing the children of Ruritania…Given that the novel is set in 1940, the children’s fears are in keeping with the times.’

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 22 January 2018Verified PurchaseThis book more than met my expectations. Not only a great read but the author has truly done his homework. A page turner from start to finish. I feel it will appeal to a wide range of ages from early teens through to someone in their nineties. Without giving too much away one of the characters little Georgie is endearing and from the moment he is introduced I couldn’t help but take him into my heart. A thought provoking read on many levels. Don’t let the light die Mr McKenna more of this will be eagerly awaited.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 5 February 2018Verified PurchaseWhen the author is a good friend, it can make reading their first novel awkward. But in this case, it was not. I loved this book. A total page turner and the characters, words and ideas have stayed with me long after finishing it. I couldn't help thinking of some of my favourite books as I read it - not least Stephen King's 'IT' and William Golding's 'Lord of the Flies'. Wonderful book by a wonderful man.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 5 June 2018The Dying Light is a beautiful story set during World War II. I loved every page. My favorite character is Georgie, I loved him since he was introduced. All the characters were so memorable and seemed so real and special in their own way. I was transported to the London of that time. I enjoyed the plot very much, this book is definitely a page-turner. Also, an amazing account of how children cope individually under extreme circumstances. I totally recommend it.
