A magical read from start to finish: an inverse fairy, a brewing horror, and a lasting mystery. At times, sadness clothed with humor, though also a lot of sadness clothed in just sadness and deeper sadness. Truly a trip into the psyche of humankind and what keeps us from being kind to other humans.
This is a book with much depth and multiple layers. The character development and plot are strong and the writing just the same, moving from bleak to devastating to beautiful, like romantic poetry intertwined with horror. There is a deep focus on the internal-external struggle, which I personally loved. And an interesting questioned is raised: Do we have to die on the inside in order to live more on the outside? Or live externally to lose our inner self? At one point the lead character thinks: “The two sides of me were constantly at each other’s throats, one wanting peace from everything including my own mind and the other wanting a piece of the non–stop action.”
I found this book both entertaining and deep. This is not the kind of genre I usually read but it is what I would now want to read. Literally this book is a “throne of ache,” which you should be aching to read.
