This disc, recorded well in 1995, continues the excellent set recorded by the Vlach Quartet of Prague. The quartet continues the name of a much older quartet from years ago and which I was familiar with on the Supraphon label. That quartet was an excellent group of players and the same can be said of this later group.

In particular, when considering this repertoire, it must be emphasised that one of the essentials of playing such music as this is that the style must be idiomatic and have the dancing feel of Slavonic folk music. This ability and awareness is apparent throughout this excellent disc and Dvorak's music emerges with all the characteristic freshness that was so obviously written into it. This is not music full of angst. It is essentially sunny music written in an irrepressibly sunny style.

The Vlach quartet make excellent guides to this music and have the advantage of being on a budget label. They have a noticeably warmer style than the more driven approach of the Melos quartet on DGG for example and the recorded sound is also warmer. There are other more dramatic and driven performances of these pieces but this set emphasises the more rural aspects of Dvorak's music. This makes an excellent choice for those who find other performances to be too international in mood, excellent though those performances may be in their own individual ways.

I would therefore suggest that, for those who see this music as essentially sunny and fresh as opposed to driven and dramatic, this disc deserves serious consideration as a purchase.

Excellent playing. Only missing that extra star because it doesn't quite match up to the old recordings by the Prague 4tet on Deutsche Grammophon.

Idiomatic playing but there is better from the Carmina and Panocha quartets.

I was unfamiliar with the quartet, but Naxos are usually reliable so I went for it. I wasn't disappointed and this is a very enjoyable performance.

I would reccomend this performance to anyone. The American quartet is a great introduction to the string quartets of Dvorak
