About the Author

Dr Dominic Pimenta is a Cardiology Registrar based in London. He has written for numerous national newspapers and appeared on various TV and radio programmes, including BBC Breakfast, Good Morning Britain and Channel 4 News. He was frequently interviewed and wrote published articles in the run-up to and throughout the pandemic. In March 2020, while also working in the ICU, he set up a charity, HEROES (Help Them Help Us), aimed at protecting the welfare and wellbeing of NHS workers. After garnering widespread publicity, the charity has since passed £1m in donations, which have been used to buy and create PPE, and provide counselling services, childcare grants, food drops and other services for healthcare professionals.

I know Dom as a friend and colleague, but his clear, genuine, and textured writing style adds more than any other narrative to an account of this collective human endeavour of facing a once in a century pandemic.

He paints faces and creates a contextual canvas to patients who weathered and passed away during the pandemic; he expressed the fears and motivations of all his fellow Nhs colleagues. At it’s heart, this is an account of what it was like being in the eye of the storm, about the hundreds of patients who were under our care daily, and the principles by which Dom lives and why he sacrificed his training for a higher cause. Duty of Care takes you through the COVID-19 pandemic in an NHS hospital doctor’s life. It’s very well-written and I found it hard to put down, echoing Ian Dunt’s words (review on the book’s cover) that it is “gripping and eye-opening”, a good read for anyone looking for truth about the “readiness” of the NHS for COVID and its cost to society, not only those with COVID but the many thousands suffering because the NHS has been too depleted to respond to a serious pandemic and still sustain other healthcare.

For anyone interested in medicine, it is a fascinating insight into details of a doctor’s work along the way, although primarily it is an account of astonishing courage, enterprise, social contract and a lot of phenomenally hard work by wonderful people in very difficult conditions as the reality of COVID hit hospitals and families. It’s also a sober reflection on what could have been different. Written from the heart by a doctor who cares deeply about people’s health and the NHS, it’s a must read for lovers of facts. Highly recommended.

This was the most moving book I have read this year . Whist we were anxious and worried about lockdown and shielding these incredible people were fighting a war against an unknown enemy whilst dealing with a bumbling and dithering government . Thank goodness there are hundreds of strong people in our community who are not interested in power or status but the human condition and compassion
This book also tells the story of the anguish and decision making which affected the families of the personnel involved . It’s a compulsive read and prepares us for the next wave . The proceeds are going to an amazing charity as an extra bonus .

A real insight into the nature and cost of Covid 19

As a Chaplain in a hospital in Guernsey, where the virus was contained very quickly and most of the community pulled together, I wanted to understand how healthcare colleagues in the UK worked and suffered during the first wave. Certainly this book gives a real insight into the real courage and enormous compassion showed by those working on the front line in the UK. It also paints a picture of pro-active intervention by healthcare professionals who not only weren’t prepared to accept the under-resourcing and lack of support by the government, but were willing to move heaven and earth to do something about it.

I wasn't sure what to expect going into this book but I honestly found it to be one of the most fascinating reads I have ever picked up. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to get a true account of what the pandemic was really like on the front lines.
