Product Description

Product Description

Self recorded and produced in their own studio, situated in a condemned building in Wellington, New Zealand, the album was honed down from over two albums‐worth of material. The result a 13‐track album that the band feels represents their true sound and best work yet.‘’Working in our own studio gave us the freedom to get the best out of ourselves over a longer period of time, and to trial new techniques and tones with our own Mike Fabulous at the controls’’ says singer/guitarist Barnaby Weir. From the get‐go, album opener ‘Out of Light’ with it’s shimmering keyboards and trippyvocals showcases a re‐invigorated band with a more expansive sound. ‘Loose Cartilage’, inspired in part by an AC/DC concert comes flying out of the traps with a beast of a riff before slipping into a funk‐laden Black Seeds groove. The chilled‐out disco dub of ‘Don’t Turn Around’, born out of a spontaneous jam beforerehearsal, and the blaring horn line and varied use of instrumentation on ‘Love Me Now’, are testament to a band at the top of their game, revelling in their new found creative freedom.

I bought this album with great anticipation having hugely enjoyed 'Solid Ground' and 'Into the Dojo'. My excitement was further fuelled by the Amazon review which told me that this band are "at the top of their game". I have now listened to 'Dust and Dirt' half a dozen times, and am dismayed to report that it is heading for my shelves rarely to be spun again. I haven't the enthusiasm to comment on the album track by track-there are moments when it catches fire, but the flames are quickly dampened by uninspiring 'pop reggae' and 'cod funk'. I have taken the three decent tracks off this album and included them on a compilation cd- the rest do not inspire repeat listening.

HASH(0x878dee58) out of 5 stars best roots-reggae band in the southern hemisphere(and about most of the northern) 10 April 2012
By Groovemeister Shay - Published on Amazon.com
I have been listening to The Black Seeds for over a decade. With the release of their Dust & Dirt album, they continue to prove to me that they are the #1 roots-reggae band playing today! The Black Seeds fuse New Zealand folk, out-of-this-world funk, roots-reggae, and a heavy dose of psychadelic dub to create their unique, head-bobbing sound. I will be attending the Dust & Dirt show at Castaway's, in Ithica, Ny.

HASH(0x8857c624) out of 5 stars A Dub CD for Dub Fans 26 Feb. 2013

Really an excellent CD. The vocals are there, but they are like a nice dressing on the sick BASS SALAD. Lots of great instrumentals. Can't go wrong with this one.

Bought for a longstanding dub fan who heard some of this played on the radio. He must love it as it has been taken to the shed and is played while he works.

Good, if somewhat eclectic reggae band. Previous album is more mainsteam reggae, but I like this one, much more interesting.
