Currently, we are in the post-"Twilight" era of vampire entertainment -- pouty, ineffectual "sexy" vampires have been replaced by cruel, hideous monsters.

And one solid example is"From Dusk Till Dawn: Complete Season One," a TV series spun off from the Robert Rodrieguez/Quentin Tarantino movie. While it can be a bit slow at times, this gritty, blood-spattered series deepens and expands the original story, weaving in mystical visions, Mesoamerican folklore and a scattering of new characters who add a lot to the story.

After a bank heist, the notorious Gecko brothers are on the road to Mexico, leaving a trail of blood and bodies behind them. Seth (D.J. Cotrona) is also concerned about his mentally-unstable brother Richie (Zane Holtz) who frequently is lost in nightmarish hallucinations, hears voices, and kills people at the urging of a strange woman who allows him to see into people's minds.

In pursuit is Freddie (Jesse Garcia), a Texas Ranger who wants revenge on the Geckos for his mentor's death. He also has Richie's bone pocketknife, which has some kind of mystical connection to a shadowy Mexican cartel run by the sinister Don Carlos (Wilmer Valderrama). As we see a couple episodes in, Carlos is a vampire. And not the sexy sparkly variety -- more the kind that leaves teen boys a desiccated ash-grey husk.

After Richie kills their hostage, Seth abducts disgraced minister Jacob Fuller (Robert Patrick) and his two kids, so they can get into Mexico. The Fullers, the Geckos, Freddie and Carlos all converge on a gritty little strip bar that is more than it seems -- the undead rule this place, led by Satanico Pandemonium, the ancient vampire goddess who has haunted Richie's mind. And tonight, the whole bar will be a bloodbath.

I rarely give series 5 out of 5 stars but I had to make an exception for this. I am a massive fan of the original From Dusk Till Dawn so when I found out that they have started a series on it, I had to buy it. Be careful their are some spoilers here. This series is great as it really expands on the mythology of the Homo Nosferatu Vampiris. We learn a lot more about the Aztec temple that was seen in the ending of the original film and about the "Vampires" themselves. The series also has several differences with the film but I feel they are all good for the series. The main characters appear to be younger than they are in the film. The brothers contact Carlos is a vampire himself here and the black soldier veteran of the Vietnam War has already faced vampires before unlike in the film. People have said that the series is slow to start which I agree with but in that time we learn so much of the characters back stories and we learn more about the Homo Nosferatu Vampiris. I am eagerly awaiting the second season to be released on DVD.

Notorious criminals Seth and Richie Gecko are on the run after robbing a bank. Kidnapping en route a preacher and his family, they take refuge in a remote sleazy Mexican bar - unaware of the unspeakable horrors that await....

The classic 1996 film has been expanded into a ten episode series, with other seasons to follow. The result is a gorefest with no pulling back on terrors unleashed. Addicts of the genre have taken it all in their stride, but I confess to finding it all a bit much - especially with confusing chronology and ever-increasing accumulation of blood-drenched twists and turns.

Much though impressed, especially Robert Patrick as the preacher - wife dead and faith now seriously challenged. Admiration was great for Ranger Freddy Gonzales. From the start he had pledged to avenge the shooting of his mate - focus ever since on his dogged pursuit with life constantly under threat. Here was awesome dedication to duty, he deserving acclaim and rewards (should he survive).

Generous bonuses include commentaries and sundry background information - main one to watch concerning how the series came about.

Although ultimately everything became too extreme for me, there is no denying the makers have achieved most dramatically what they set out to do.

The first episode and into the third plays almost identical to the film , merely expanding it poorly. D.J.Cotrona who plays Seth is almost identical to clooney in the role; even matching the head tilt. Zane Holtz plays Richard and although the better actor over Tarantino, he lacks the kookiness that added to Tarantino as the psychopath especially as in the series he is given an excuse in that his visions are responsible, not merely a psychopath. By episode 3 I was still waiting for something to happen. As a movie that slow build to the WTF bar scene works, but as a series it is too long drawn out. By episode 6 we finally reach the bar and learn more of Santanico and her past aswell as the mysterious nine lords. Ep 8,9, and 10 are all out action with plenty of gore for horror fans but a horror series like this should of reached action long before episode 7. I enjoy series that have little action as long as the plot and dialogue can keep your attention, but in a series like From Dusk Till Dawn, you aren't here for a speech , you're here for action and as such the series does not live up to expectation. I will give series 2 a try as the finale allowed for a potentially intriguing next step .
