There can be no question as to the quality of the Music. However there are issues with the Software that created it. Apart from adding this CD to my Library I also intended to use it to rehearse at home for a forthcoming performance with my Choral Society. I usually listen via Microsoft Windows Media Player as my Family do not like Choral Music and my study provides a suitable medium. I found that it will not play on Media Player nor on anything other than a dedicated CD Player. It is also not able to be transferred to an MP3 or IPod for personal, and temporary, use only. Whilst the producers may think that copy protection is needed it seems to go too far by blocking the ability to play via a PC. I think this needs to be clearly spelt out by Amazon in its advertising. Only this feature prevents me from awarding 5 stars.

Firstly, there is an editing error, as others have pointed out, at 3.15 in track 15, but I suspect that this is on the master tape from the 1971 recording - certainly annoying, but not fatal to one's enjoyment of the main work here, which is, I believe, the second version of Maurice Duruflé's Requiem (the third and final version came in 1961) as it was recorded in 1959. Directed by the composer, this mysterious, other-worldly, work could be said to have had it's authoritative performance all those years ago. I'm not so sure about that as there are many excellent recordings of this deeply spiritual work in the catalogue.

This inexpensive CD also contains the Quatre motets sur des thèmes Grégoriens, Op.10, the Messe "cum jubilo", Op.11 and the Prélude et fugue sur le nom d'Alain, Op.7.

As a good conspectus of Duruflé's life work the Warner Apex disc can be safely recommended although the Erato recordings are now getting very long in the tooth. Other good choices in this repertoire come from Harmonia Mundi Durufle: Requiem / Quatre Motets sur des Themes Gregoriens / Messe Cum Jubilo (The Choir of Magdalen College, Oxford / Bill Ives) available in SACD and featuring the Choir of Magdalen College, Oxford, the English Sinfonia, and soloists under Bill Ives, or the Coro e Orchestra dell'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia CD with Myung-Whun Chung on Deutsche Grammophon for the Requiem In Paradisum - Requiems by Fauré and Duruflé.

Just returned a second copy of this disk. The performances are great and the recordings commendable, but there is a large audio drop-out at around 3`15" into track 15. It's identical on both the copies I received, so it looks like a mastering error. Doesn't anyone at the studio check these things?

This recording, conducted by the composer, is simply awe-inspiring in it's scope. The sound, though not as clinically clear as a more modern recording might be, is lush, characterful, and transmits the intensity and intent of the performers beautifully, without artifice. Durufle draws some incredible sounds from the musicians, who give the impression of being entirely caught up in the colours and textures he has created - a masterful performance of a work too seldom heard, especially in this fully orchestrated version. Magic!
