Incase youre in a similar position:
You hold the key shaped black/silver part with the black section facing upwards.
Strike it with the FLAT side of the saw-like part.
It wont do anything until the black surface of the key part is scratched off and the silver part beneath is revealed.
Starting a fire with it is a whole different story.. I cant even light a piece of tissue yet! (all due to my poor skills- as the product does make a spark as well as any ive seen in videos)
Once thing I would perhaps go for if I buy another; is to get one with a more comfortable handle on the key-like part. because its so small, and you have to grip it quite firmly when striking, making it quite uncomfortable. Other more expensive ones seem to have a bigger area to hold on to. (this is not an issue if you can light your fire first time...)
The striker also doubles as a saw in an emergency as it has teeth on it and can be used as such.
Remember, strike with the smooth diagonal edge of the striker, not the teeth.
I tried it and got a spark straight away. The top part seems easier to get a spark when you strike it. One side acts as a saw which will come in handy when sawing wood.

It's a bit small and is on the cheaper end of this type of product. The strike length is important.Published on 11 Aug. 2014 by johnny reggae
Great gift for the kids at a fantastic price. Who doesn't want to think they are Bear Grylls in the back yard?Published on 1 Jan. 2014 by Philip Smith
