However, once on Dune, Paul discovers he is earmarked for an even greater destiny. The cast also includes Francesca Annis, Max von Sydow, Linda Hunt and Sting.

This two-disc special edition release of David Lynch's 1984 film Dune presents the same cut as originally shown theatrically, but with an improved transfer compared to the previous DVD edition and with the addition of new and archive documentary material. In case of confusion, it should be noted that this is not any of the following versions: the re-edited TV movie adaptation of Lynch's film, the long-sought-after extended version Lynch screened for cast and crew in January 1984, a new Director's Cut, or the Sci-Fi Channel mini series.

The first disc contains a new anamorphically enhanced 2.35:1 transfer taken from a High Definition archive copy of the 1984 film, further restored to remove dirt and scratches, and a Dolby Digital 5.1 remix as well as the original stereo soundtrack. The film looks superb and sounds almost as good, though a DTS soundtrack would have been welcome. This is much superior to the average making-of, featuring significant new contributions from Kyle MacLachlan, producer Raffaella De Laurentiis, cinematographer Freddie Francis and others--though David Lynch is conspicuous by his absence. Destination Dune is a six-minute promotional featurette made by Sammon at the time of the film's release and the 4:3 image is fairly poor quality. An 83-second BBC interview with Frank Herbert is too short to be of more than passing interest, though the original trailer is a fine example of the 1980's way of selling movies. The set is completed with routine cast and crew profiles. Even with no involvement from Lynch and no commentaries, this is still the best Dune on DVD. --Gary S. Dalkin

This is pure Hollywood...
With scant following of story of the mythical hero Robin Hood (Locksley) a swashbuckling story unfolds.
Robin (Kevin Costner) escapes captivity from the Turks along with a Moor he saved from certain death Azeem (Morgan Freeman) who vows to repay the debt.
The two arrive in England and head toward Nottingham Robin's home.
Robin finds that his father had been killed and the estate left in ruins.
Nottingham isn't the same as it once was, it is ruled by the evil Sherriff played by Alan Rickman (an ideal casting choice)
Robin soon becomes outlawed and joins up with the forest living band also outlawed including Little John (Nick Brimble) (who is given an inappropriate (for the territory) strong west country turn of phrase, along with Will Scarlett (Christian Slater)
Love interest for Robin, Maid Marion (Mary Elizabeth Mastranton) (of course)
The battle is on to right the wrongs imposed by the Sherriff
Great fun from start to finish.
The package comes with a booklet with info and pictures from the film, four postcard pics from the film and a poster.
The picture upgrade is in the main is really pretty good though there are a few borderline moments in terms of visual quality.

I know alot of people will talk about the accents but really this is such an enjoyable movie and has a fantastic cast doesn't take itself too serious with some iconic one liners.

As a fan of the whole dune universe buying this was a no brainer for me but there is a serious flaw that almost makes me want to return it (im not but.....) and that is its a remaster of the theatrical version which does not include all the extra bits that really flesh out the story, also im saddened to say that the age of the film (and the camera's used) makes the live action shots look not as sharp as they could be, you see this clearly when the shots change from the cgi/model to live and vice versa.

I suspect that they want to see how this version go's and maybe then do a 4k version of the directors cut for the next anniversary.

Feudalism, even messianic, can't be the future

That film is a superb adaptation of Frank Herbert's first novel of his Dune series. We could of course harp a lot about the symbolism of names, the Fremen being free men, and the Harkonnen having a Germanic name, and the Atreides having a Greek sounding name, and the Emperor having an Arab name, and we could also add that the witches, the Bene Gesserit have a Latin sounding name, etc. We could also said that the name of the hero, Muad'dib also sounds Arabic, or is it Hindi, though the frequent aspirated `h' of this latter language is absent from this writing and pronouncing. But that is superficial and the worst name and being is not present in this film and book, the real Arabs, the Sligs, the hybrid of a giant slug and a pig, who are the direct reflection and mirror image of the caricature of the sly Arab living by the sharia so common in the West. What is interesting in this volume and film is the political intrigues along with the prophetic dimension of the plot. The political intrigues revolves around the Greek sounding Atreides, the honest ones from a planet of oceans and rain; the Germanic sounding Harkonnen, the rotten (actually rotting) polluting industrial ones who are violent, vicious and sadistic, slightly vampiristic too; the Persian sounding Emperor Shaddam, bringing together the Shah of Iran and all the Saddams of the Arab world; the Spacing Guild that controls the universe by controlling travelling in that universe; and finally the Fremen, an underground free species of human beings who believe in a prediction of a Messiah and are mostly invisible on the planet Dune. The Bene Gesserit is also present with their plan to produce the perfect new Messiah, God, Savior through genetic manipulations by guiding the reproductive schemes among the powerful from whom the Messiah can only come. He will nevertheless come for sure, but by accident and thanks to the alliance of Paul Atreides, the last representative of the Atreides House, his Bene-Gesserit-trained mother and the Fremen. Some will see in it the caricature of the world in the Cold War. Of course we have to know one thing that is not immediately clear: the fact that this world is the heir of the Butlerian Jihad that destroyed all thinking machines and then banned the construction of such machines, forcing human beings to develop their skills at calculating and thinking to keep the control over things. But this vision is slightly short. It goes beyond and it reaches the level of a reflection on what politics are: a fight among a very few superior leaders who are essential born as such and vaguely accepted by some managing more than governing council. Democracy is the value that is totally absent from this story. Even the Fremen are not democratic since they believe in a supreme leader, a messiah, and their actions are mostly mass-reactions, extremely collective methods of governing and controlling their own people. That future world then will not be different from the old feudal world of six or seven centuries ago. The people, the mass of people necessary for those constant wars and feuds, are nothing but pawns that die on the screen and in the sand of Dune without any kind of concern for their lives or even simply life. They are non-entities, including on the winning side of the Fremen. That world is dehumanized and does not defend any kind of ideal or principle. The film is perfect though with its special effects and its immense cosmic and desertic scenery. The film is very dense and thus the suspense is quite effective. The film then is nothing but an action film with good situations and interesting characters, be they heroes or be they monsters. This vision of the world remains rather primitive though and maybe even lower than what could be normal expectations. It satisfies though the desire for survival and victory over danger that lurks in the circumvolutions of the human brain. That's probably why this film, and the books behind, still have a positive life in our culture. Messianic characters and situations contrasted to apocalyptic treachery will always be a favorite of the human mind.

I've watched this movie many times over the years. It's a tricky watch, as the scenes appear quite disjointed at times and you need to watch it several times over to make sense of it. The original Frank Herbert novel is huge, and I've never put the time in to read it. However, with the advent of the new Dune movie in 2021, I took the opportunity to listen to the audible adaptation and then re-watch the 1984 movie to understand more about the film.

I'll not spoil anything, but I do now understand the challenge that faced the producers and directors of the 1984 in trying to get across the main narrative of the story in just over 2 hours of movie time. Most, if not all, of the main scenes are in the film and the dialogue is true to the book. The narration at the beginning of each chapter now makes some sort of sense, but re-watching the movie over-and-over won't highlight this, you'll need to read/listen to the book too.

Loads of 80's actors in this film, you'll know many if not all of them (depending upon your vintage).

Overall, a good watch for sci-fi movie fans. It looks "of its time" but, to be fair, its pretty close to the book so it appears the book is dated, not the film. There's a change to the final scene in the film that differs from the book that shows that, even in 1984, some of the background to the story and the reasons for the war were extremely dated. Have a watch, have a read and form your own opinion.
