Darkness in Dundee

A good crime novel always leaves me wanting more - NOW! What a treat, then, to have a box set of three from this mistress of the genre. The ends of the stories leave the way open for more, and they are so cleverly interwoven. I've only ever visited Dundee in the daylight, but I wouldn't hang about in its back streets after dark now; creepiness doesn't even touch it.

The Dundee set

Chris Longmuir knows very well what readers of crime enjoy. Her novels, in this series and in her historical mysteries, are tense, chilling and very satisfying. The stories are set in and around a brilliantly realised Dundee, the characters are authentic and credible, and there’s always a dark thread running beneath the apparent normality of the lives they’re living. In Night Watcher, it’s provided not only by the anonymous murderer whose ‘voices’ urge him to kill his chosen victims, but also by some of the ‘ordinary’ people who make up the small cast of central characters. They don’t hear ‘voices’, but power, lust and revenge make their impulses just as deadly. Love is transactional, infidelity is the norm and Longmuir keeps the focus tightly on them as the night watcher observes them from his shadows.

The second novel, Dead Wood, is equally absorbing. Longmuir handles the plot very skilfully, avoiding facile goodie/baddie characterisation and sustains the mystery and narrative pace of all the best thrillers. It's a hugely enjoyable read.

By novel number three, Missing Believed Dead, we know the police personnel very well, but Longmuir introduces a new element in the shape of D.I. Kate Rawlings, who stirs up the relationships between them. At the same time, the crimes they’re investigating revolve around a missing teenager and the members of her family, online predators, and another abducted teenager for whom the clock is ticking inexorably towards what threatens to be a painful, fatal outcome. Altogether, it’s a dark, scary picture of an apparently ordinary world of ordinary people whose actions and motives betray the demons within them.

Putting the three together makes this a very attractive box set.

A box of dark Dundee delights!

I loved all three of these books. The box set is a great bargain bundle of thrills. The first in the Dundee Crime Series, Nightwatcher is about revenge, obsession, and stalking. But far from the stereotyped 'psycho man stalks helpless women' scenario which is all too familiar, Longmuir has created flawed, suffering yet sympathetic characters, and the stalking is, refreshingly, not all by men. There is a strong police procedural strand to the novel, and we meet some all-too-human officers, mainly DS Bill Murphy, a basically caring man who gets too involved with victims of crime, but is a bit slapdash about official procedures. The stage is set early in the book, and the drama plays out, keeping the reader firmly seated and gripped until the end. As for the second mega-award winning thriller, like the others it's well written, tightly plotted, dark and well, thrilling. It's so good I devoured it despite the female body count which is something I'm wary of normally. Highly recommended. The third kicks off like a steroid-crazed Bruce Lee - hooking the reader at once. Longmuir has great skill at tightly-drawn plotting and also at drawing characters who are believable and whose experiences have marked them in credible ways - but just who are victims and who are perpetrators, here? Detective DS Bill Murphy is now joined by takes-no-prisoners Kate Rawlings as his new, unimpressed, superior. I hope she will stick around for future books in the series.

Accomplished crime writing

This box-set is a fantastic offer from an accomplished crime writer. I particularly like Dead Wood where a hard-boiled detective struggles with a disintegrating private life. Sounds familiar? But this is no Rebus clone, because through Kara, a young single Mum and potential the next victim of a serial killer, we get to know a whole team of liaison officers and social workers which adds new dimensions to the police procedural element and great authenticity to this tense crime drama. In all of the books , Dundee makes a great backdrop to events: unglamorous, gritty and with just a whiff of the sea, and some characters so bizarre (like the hooker who keeps snakes!) I'm hoping there's a real-life equivalent somewhere!
I also like that Longmuir gets to grips with ugliness of murder in the city but steps away from some of the stomach-churning violence of modern crime writing. Recommended.

Cracking Crime Series

This box set contains three of the deadliest crime books I have read in a long time. Longmuir is a talented writer and this shows in every page. She knows just how to keep the reader turning the pages by using every word to good effect. The characterisation in the books is superb. I love the character of Bill Murphy. He is a solid character, lovable and yet with flaws. Don't let this fool you, however, as he has a steely determination to catch his killer. I found myself warming to all the characters, even the bad guys. I may not like some of them. but I certainly knew what they were like. The storylines are good and the plot rattles along at a cracking pace. You will find yourself finishing one and then starting the next one immediately. This is a box set I would highly recommend.

Three's the Magic Tartan Charm

Here's the perfect introduction to the dark, tough and suspenseful work of a Scottish master of the police procedural. In each outing Chris Longmuir offers a superb blend of authentic Dundee setting, masterful characterization terrific detecting--and spartan but elegant prose. The series, be warned, is addictive--so do yourself a favor and get three for the price of two.
