In length the game lasted me longer than your average shooter so the story has quite a generous length to it. In addition to this there are lots of things to collect and interact with in the game, such as finding objects that you can interact with or getting a high score at pinball in order to increase your ego meter which again add to the play time. Duke has undergone a modern FPS paint job, rather than relying on health packs and being able to hold a massive arsenal of weaponry you instead have a rechargeable health bar called an Ego meter and you are only able to carry 2 weapons at a time. This may be a let down for some Duke fans but for me it didn't effect the game hugely. The industry has changed drastically over the years so it was not a surprise to see the game undergo a modern makeover.
To people that liked the old Duke style of running and gunning I can't recommend Serious Sam enough, it will certainly scratch that itch as you have health packs, tons of enemies and have no weapon carry limit! This means you can quickly switch between the massive arsenal of weaponry in order to take down hordes of enemies rushing you.
To some up my review:
Decent game, heavily criticized by reviewers but its up to you to formulate your own opinion
Game does feel dated but consider its history
Lots of laughs, especially if you are a duke fan
Some modern features such as recharging health and a 2 weapon carrying limit may put people off
Serious Sam may be worth looking into if you fancy a more "old school" duke style game
Worth the money
Overall I give the game a 6/10. Like I said its not particularly ground breaking but it also is not a terrible game. Gearbox Software have the rights to Duke now, so in future we may be able to look forward to the King returing in style and overall look forward to a better and more polished game.
It can go over the top with the puns and crude references (yes even for Duke Nukem) sometimes. And the occasional glitch might show itself but what game doesn't these days. Otherwise it is a great action game that bring back your favourite alien freaks in enhanced detail and graphics.
You most certainly need to be 18 or older to play, normally I wouldn't be so fussy about this but the adult humour on this is crazy (in both good ways and bad ways), not even getting into the gore. Classic fans of Duke Nukem...it's a toss up it all depends on how much you like change really...if you can stand what they have done to him, then you might like it. He still has some of his classic quotes that will make you smile if that helps. As for newcomers well...welcome to one of the most crude shooters ever :D
The main problem that I had with the game was that it refused to install itself. This meant disc running noise during the playthrough.
All things considered, Duke Nukem Forever is a great game!
I am more looking forwards to a sequel to this game than a sequel to half life 2 with no aliens anytime!
However criticizing this game at every turn is incorrect. It is a lot of fun to play through, has a degree of interactivity only this game can have (well apart from perhaps Skyrim) and has room to make you laugh.
The sound effects are nice, the visuals are lovely! and the gameplay itself it quite fun, in some places throwing interesting little puzzles your way.
But the multiplayer was finished by GearBox the company behind boarderlands and many people disliked the multiplayer, it felt rushed.
My personal dislike is some of the level design, empty vegas highways in a desert and a empty western town are dull compared the the highly varying and futuristic levels of DN3D.
Other than that, a good game, it's a fiver so you can't go wrong.
