I had this on pre-order, so looking forward to a new Duke game; if "new" is the right word, perhaps "finished" would be better considering its development time. Having just completed the game on my PS3 (I have the Balls Of Steel edition for the PC) it was enjoyable in parts, frustrating in others. Many people have complained about the poor graphics, which i found to be OK, much more of an issue was the load times and playability. Often levels were very linear, and very stop/start - advance a bit/stop and kill aliens/advance a bit/stop and kill aliens - with none of the free flowing expanse of the original Duke Nukem levels. The game has incorporated an another aspect though, mainly from the likes of Half Life 2, where Duke has to solve a number of physical puzzles in order to progress, and also there is a lot of driving in various vehicles, which were in fact probably the best parts of the game. A lot of the time though, you seem to get killed quickly in new areas (on harder game settings, I imagine it would be a nightmare) and then have to wait 30secs for re-loading, which was the most annoying aspect, really broke the fluidity of the game. Duke has his usual aresnal of weapons, however, the limiting of carrying two only, and the low ammo capabilities kinda counted against it. Duke is also armed with his arsenal of one liners and quips, but considering how long the game took, the quips are a bit stale and rather lame. Needed a bit more work.
Duke's health takes the form of an Ego bar, which is really like a regenerative shield. Duke can interact with things around him, which will increase his Ego store, but there seems to be some levels with quite a few things to interact with, others with nothing. I guess this is supposed to replace the "finding secret areas" in the old Duke 3D in someway, but i thought it was lacking and not very good. There are some quite risque scenes (though not as many as i had hoped!) and as an aside; the EU version of the game has apparently had the ability to microwave the rats removed. Still, the basic game is Duke style, so some shocking behaviour is to be expected.
The Balls Of Steel set comes with a cool bust of the Duke, about 6" high, and a nice assortment of Limited Edition stuff, including a nice artwork/history of the game book. In fact dare i say that the package is a better result than the game itself. Hopefully, they will release a patch, like for Postal 2, whereby they can patch the loading times, which is probably my biggest complaint. I'm curious to know incidentally if anyone is playing this on a PC using a solid state hard drive - what are your load times like?
If you're looking to buy the game only, then i'd wait til its cheap, but if you are a big Duke fan and want the Limited Edition, i'd snap it up if you can afford it. Dunno if it will become cheap like some others have, more likely it will become collectible and command a premium in the future.
