It's very easy to forget Dukas' distinguished place among the French composers of his time (and he didn't help by tending to throw away so much of his output) but the earlyish symphony is a triumphantly enjoyable affair with a Beethovenian rigour. There's nothing vague here. La Peri I have seen described as a bore (probably by the same critic who though L'enfant et les sortileges scored the same way!) but it's a most attractive piece and far from being boring (shades of Balakirev's Tamar but more varied). Everyone knows the Sorcerer, of course, and it comes off just fine. Very good performances and splendid sound makes this CD a real winner. And it's hardly expensive!

I suspect that the sales of this disc will be largely driven by the well known first item but it is the other two works , La Peri and the gorgeous symphony which really deserve close attention. What a tragedy that much of the work of Paul Dukas is lost to us as he belongs to a wonderful period in French music of the late 19th century/early 20th century which is worth much study. I would recommend anyone who loves these works to have a look at contemporary French Composers such as Alberic Magnard and Guy Ropartz and indeed Chabrier and Massenet.

'la Peri' is a relatively new find for me and it really is stunningly beautiful work, while the 3 movement symphony is a masterpiece by any standards with a passionately moving slow movement. I am not sure why some reviewers seem to have a need to make references or comparisons with Beethoven in order to suggest that without this influence much subsequent music would lack gravitas or significance. For me, the vast majority of late Romantic music such as can be found here, moves us into musical territory that Beethoven and his contemporaries could not possibly have conceived.

Highly recommended without hesitation!

Firstly, the 4 star rating concerns the performance of the music, but some comment on the delivery and packaging of the CD is relevant - this being the reason for the loss of one star.
The reception of my first order of this CD needed to be returned as the case was damaged and the surface of the disc contained blemishes. I received a second CD without being asked to pay for it (complimentary in view of the very less than satisfactory first issue ). Unfortunately, both deliveries were less than the "brand new" description of the seller.
This situation is occurring more frequently than would be expected. Is it a matter of CD's that are being returned to the seller by less than satisfied customers only for the same CD's to be incorrectly re-labelled as "new" and sent out once again - with no seal and with damaged cases due to repeated packaging and delivery? If so, then it should not be happening and will render the reputation of such sellers as irresponsible and opportunistic, irrespective of the cost of the product.
Rather than repeat the process undertaken with the first reception of the CD, I decided to thoroughly clean the surface of the complimentary CD with a commercial CD cleaner and replace the case with a new one of my own. Fortunately, after cleaning, the disc, a re-issue of what was one of the first accounts of the "Dukas symphony" and the symphonic poem, "La Peri", played very well on all accounts. The CD is, in fact , a real bargain (where and when there are no blemishes!).
The recording comes in a new transfer from 1985 and is clear and atmospheric. The "Symphony in C" should be better known than it seemingly is (very few current recordings of the same are available). It has vitality and conviction.

AGREE WITH MOST OF THE OTHER REVIEWS. THIS IS A GREAT CD AND EXCELLENT VALUE. THE ACOUSTIC IS A LITTLE REVERBERANT, PROBABLY THE CONCERT HALL IN GENEVA WHERE THE ORCHESTRA RECORDED A LOT OF THEIR RECORDS. THE SORCERERS APPRENTICE IS ANOTHER ORCHESTRA NOT THE SUISSE ROMANDE BUT IT'S A VERY GOOD PERFORMANCE, A LITTLE SLOW IN PLACES BUT ATMOSPHERIC. THE REST OF THE PROGRAMME IS SPLENDID PARTICULARLY LA PERI AND OF COURSE THE SYMPHONY. YOU CAN'T LOSE SO BUY IT!!
