This film was originally released in 1982, and it wasn't much of a success, but now it's popularity has grown so much that it's been released on DVD. The story follows the two main characters, one from Japan and one from China, as they prepare for a duel to the death. (...)
This is a great film, with good dubbing and great martial art scenes- especially for it's time. The only things that let it down are that it has a lot of wirework effects, which can be really annoying, especially when the fighters begin to jump entire cliffs, and the effects aren't great either, but that can't be helped because obviously the technology was limited when the film was made. Although, I think that if you're one of those people who doesn't mind things like those, You'd enjoy it thoroughly.

Duel to the Death is an amazing 1983 Hong Kong martial arts film. The titular duel in this period picture refers to a competition held between a chosen Chinese and Japanese warrior as a measure of their country's prowress. Chinese swordsman Bo and Japanese Samurai Hashimoto are the chosen warriors this time and each is devoted to his craft and committed to a fair fight. However, evil forces are afoot, and many warriors are being attacked by groups of Ninjas using such outlandish devices as gliding in on giant kites or assembling themselves to form a giant super-ninja. The film was one of the early examples of wire-assisted fight scenes and it was the feature debut of the director. But there are no signs of amateurishness in the execution, the action scenes are spectacularly good (and some of them, especially the climax shot on a rocky seafront with waves crashing, must have been really hard to do) and the direction is very strong. Plot and action receive equal importance and the film's production design also looks very striking. Imagine Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon but much more entertaining. Highly recommended for martial arts movie fans.

The Hong Kong Legends Collector's Edition DVD gives a good transfer of the film, although the limitations of SD are apparent. Audio options include original Cantonese mono (with English subs) and 5.1 Cantonese and English dub mixes. There's a good slate of extras including two good interviews with lead actors from the film, an interesting behind the scenes of how wire rigs are used in action scenes and a commentary from Hong Kong movie expert Bey Logan.

This is a favorite film of mine, that I've searched for this particular version (HKL), for years. Although there was initially thought to be a concern with the delivery of the item, due to thorough customer service follow up, I found the experience to be quite satisfying.

Very good filming and martial arts choreography. The story gets a bit weird but still a good fight film.

Widely regarded as the greatest martial arts film of all time.

This film spawned countless classics, this film is the prequel to one armed swordsman. Even the musical score has been used in many kung fu flicks. I only gave four stars because this had the potential to be even better than it was. (some totally awesome fighters died very quickly) (who were they, where were they going??) And the ninja's WOW.

you have to see for yourself, if your a kung fu film fan then you must have seen this, if not then do it now.

Oh and was made by couple of newcomers called the shaw brothers.
