I loved this book, Carter and Nick's banter had me giggling so many times, Nicks comebacks were epic, my favourite lines all come from Nick from his 'they started it' to his 'no... Why would I joke about that? He was being racist' , the build up of the two characters gelling as partners was truly brilliant, the comradeship, the witty lines and twists made for a brilliant read that I couldn't put down.
The storyline and writing for new authors was just brilliant, well thought out and fast paced, it kept me wanting more. Just when you think you've worked it out, it twisted and kept me guessing right to the end.
I don't usually read crime dramas but this book has changed my mind, the whole book was a page turner from the first chapter and left me wanting more. I really wasn't ready for it to end.
A definite one click for me and a new favourite author to add to my list.
A gripping storyline full of action, it sweeps you along and keeps you wanting to know more. I need book 2 now but I suppose I'll have to be patient for a couple of months.
Love Derek Adam and Jillian Elizabeth's writing and look forward to reading more from them.
I have to put my hand up and say that although I NEVER read criminal mysteries (Jeffrey Deaver's the Devil's Teardrop was my last along those lines), I do binge watch TV shows like real life Forensic Investigations, NYPD Blue, C.S.I. and pretty much any show revolving around detectives or investigators solving crimes.
The one thing that I found truly remarkable about this book was the use of dialogue. It was sharp, witty, morbidly funny and really brought all the characters to life for me and established their individual quirks and personalities. Two cops,Nick and Carter, both with very distinguishing and opposing character traits find themselves partnered up in a bid to fight the escalating crime that is plaguing Detroit. And it is within this partnership that we really get to experience how talented Derek Adam and Jillian Elizabeth are, at not only giving readers these incredibly engaging, intelligent, sexy detectives with integrity and a hero complex, but also a story-line that captivates, enthrals and holds your attention in its fists til the very last page.
'He didn't respond. He just stood there like a statue, pointing that big a$$ gun at my face. I've had guns pointed at me before, I've been shot at, it's part of the job. There was something different about this time.
The end of the barrel was staring me down, and I could feel it shaking my confidence. I was absolutely certain he would pull the trigger. I'd die, then he would die.'
This is a truly spectacular thriller. It's real and gritty but with surprisingly softer elements of romance and comedy to balance all the drama and seriousness of the plot. Each character is tremendously written, they're complex, realistic and mesmerising. This is the one book that would certainly have me taking an interest in reading criminal mysteries again.
What a ride! I loved Derek and Jillian's own books so I've been looking forward to their collaboration and it didn't disappoint. I already knew from the previous books that Nick and Carter were loyal partners so what I really enjoyed here was getting to know them at the start of their partnership.
Like Mass Casualty (Derek) and Out of the Storm (Jillian) before it this was a fast paced, sexy and griping crime thriller. I laughed, oh those one liners, I cried and I had to put the book down several times to catch my breath. I was kept guessing throughout the whole thing. Every time I thought I knew which way was up there was another curveball. I loved being proved wrong and I love being right. I didn't even mind.
I really love this Motor City Universe Derek and Jillian have created and the way the timeline of the books is interchanging. I feel like you can jump in anywhere and be swept right along. I can't wait to see what's next from Derek and Jillian, both collectively and individually.
Looking forward to reading whatever comes next from Derek Adams. Well done!
