Product Description

Uncle Scrooge and the colourful cast of characters from Disney's popular DuckTales series go hunting treasure in this action-packed animated adventure. With his nephews Huey, Dewey, and Louie, and his niece Webbigail Vanderquack at his side, everyone's favorite rich uncle, Scrooge McDuck, treks from his mansion home in Duckburg in search of the long-lost loot of the legendary thief Collie Baba. But finding the treasure isn't quite what it's "quacked" up to be. Their journeys lead to comical chaos, magical mayhem and a lesson about what is far more valuable than money, gold and jewels.

Disneys DuckTales is finally coming to DVD. DuckTales the tv series spanned over 4 seasons over 2 and a half years and capped off a superb seriers from Disney. DuckTales: Treasure of the Lost Lamp made its theatrical debut in between 1989 and 1990. Featuring Scrooge McDuck and his nephews, in this full-lenght feature film, the legendary treasure of Colli Babba has been discovered by a dig team working for Scrooge. But when Mr. McDuck arrives in the Eygptian desert he finds more than he bargains for in the shape of the evil sorcerror Merlock and the real treasure of Colli Babba, a magical Lamp. Now-a-days Disney have better technology to graphically make better films, but this Disney Classic never grows old.

Long before the "cheapquels" and lousy followup films put out in the 2000's - Disney originally set up the studio destined to work on titles like the "Tinkerbell" films and "Return to Neverland" to work on a project to develop proper feature length films to complement their incredibly popular "Disney Afternoon" line up in the 90's.

"Ducktales: Treasure of the Lost Lamp" was the first movie developed from this project. Released to cinemas in 1992, the film unfortunately bombed, forcing Disney to cut back their plans on things like a Rescue Rangers movie, the only other film to come out of the "Disney Afternoon Films" plan was "A Goofy Movie" (and it's sequel "An Extremely Goofy Movie") - which did considerably better, but came out much later in 1995.

"Treasure of the Lost Lamp" starts with Scrooge and his extended family taking off in search of a great treasure hidden in the desert. After traversing a number of traps (with the help of Huey, Louie and Dewey and their Junior Woodchuck guidebook), they manage to find the payload, but end up losing almost all of it trying to escape a giant crab-monster and a rising tide. By chance Scrooge manages to save the lamp from the treasure. It turns out the lamp holds a young mischevious duck genie eager to play and be free. However a powerful sorcerer is searching for the lamp, and seeks to combine his power with that of the lamp.

So far, so "Aladdin" (which came out about the same time) - however the way Ducktales approaches the ages old story is interesting, the genie (unlike Robin William's genie) is as much a kid physically as he is mentally.

A charming blend of Aladdin (or Sinbad?), Indiana Jones, Pinocchio, and what could be Donald Duck's dad. There's lots of little jokes such as the pilot telling Mr Scrooge McDuck that he has taken a crash-course in flying a plane, and when the plane ends up on its back, the landing gear comes up. The young ones are cute with their expression "Quackeroonie", and when they meet the genie and demand the customary genie "three wishes for a master" rule, Webbabigail says "Gee, I guess one of us ought to wish for peace and happiness all over the world" to which the genie replies "Hey—These are wishes, not miracles!". Very amusing. The story is about Scrooge and his three nephews and a niece searching for the treasure of Collie Baba. But unbeknownst to them, a sorcerer called Merlock (which sounds like a blend of Merlin with Sherlock) wants one particular treasure, that, mated with his magic amulet will give him unlimited wishes. Dijon is his dopey sidekick as a traitor to these treasure-hunters. There is a hint of Dumbo and Fantasia (the latter when the toys come to life) in this.
That this is an animation is incredible, when you see the brilliant action, especially inside the pyramid. For a moment, your brain forgets that you are looking at a cartoon; it is almost a movie. This is a clean, fun, amusing cartoon that cheers you up.

A lovely adventure cartoon. My 5 and 4 year old got a bit scared and I had to turn it off sadly. They do have vivid imaginations and scare easily so if your child is a bit more robust to bad guys I would recommend this!

Harmless fun once more from Disney, speckled with themes about family, selfless acts and believing in yourself. With lots of wild animation and dizzying action from exploring tombs and watching our crazy Genie cause havoc along the way, this is faithful to the 'DuckTales' TV series with all cast returning to their roles. At just over an hour, it could be seen as a template for the mainstream release of 'Aladdin' two years later as it shares many themes and story ideas, but done in a far more traditional way.

Harmless indeed.

Our family loved this movie when we saw it on Tv quite a few years ago, and our old incomplete tape of it has been done to death in the meantime. We enjoyed seeing the complete story, and look forward to sharing it with our grandchildren when they visit. There's mystery humour and adventure enough for everyone.

It is a good story, wouldn't say the best one ever. It is about Genie in a bottle granting wishes to the kids and causing chaos. My nearly 4 year old didn't like it at first. I think you need to watch it few times to appreciate it. You can see it is an old story, the quality is not great. But if you are a Duck Tales fun you would like it.
