My memories of this wonderful production are strong and revisiting the series has been a joy. By today's standards the series does move a bit slowly, but it's worth adjusting yourself to a time when every episode didn't have to be paced so quickly as to catch an audience within two episodes. I was also surprised by the use of sets for the show: My memory was of locations...but the hotel is indeed a set.
My complaint is the incredibly poor transfer quality (knocking the fifth star off my rating). Expect the quality of a VHS tape that you've had for a while. Some episodes are better than others, but a digital enhancement was the least this wonderful series deserved. Further, three episodes are put together on each disc as one long playing "part". At times this is obvious at others not, but this a poor decision, particularly in the first episodes. Two and a half hours is a lot of viewing without a set break point especially for someone new to the series. This also makes it feel a bit cheap and rushed to production. Unfortunately this combined with the slow pace may discourage further watching but please persist...you will be rewarded.
The Duchess is a wonderful pearl...well worth the view, a shame it wasn't given a bit of a polish before it was put on the shelf.

It had been many years since I'd seen the Duchess of Duke Street, and I was only a kid at the time, so I wasn't sure if I'd enjoy the series as much second time round as an adult. I needn't of worried - it's sensational - the story, the characters, the costumes, and of course the inspirational Louisa Trotter herself! This TV series motivated me to pursue a career in the hospitality industry and watching it again I can see why. I'm looking forward to watching Series 1 Vol 2 soon. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is there are a few episodes in which Louisa doesn't appear - which slows the pace of the show somewhat, otherwise I highly recommend it for anyone with an interest in Edwardian England, cooking, the hotel business and successful independant female role models!

This is by far one of the best BBC series I've watched. It is a good yarn based on a true story and transformed beautifully into a TV drama. I've found all the episodes to be fascinating and entertaining. If you like the old style BBC dramas then this one is for you.

John Hawkesworth former producer of Upstairs Downstairs, brought us this excellent series. Indeed this is the one time that I truly respected Christopher Cazenove. His performance in this is standout.

This show is loosely based on the the real-life Rosa Lewis. She was known as the Duchess of Jermyn Street and ran the Cavendish Hotel in London.

Gemma Jones is excellent in the lead role and June Brown of EastEnders fame is also great as her mother. Victoria Plunket from the TV production of "How Green was my Valley" 1975 is truly excellent as Mary the long suffering friend of Louisa.

Richard Vernon, John Cater, John Welsh are also stalwarts in the show and there are a host of famous names coming and going throughout the 31 episodes.

The Show would absolutely get 5*****, but the dvd package lets it down a bit. There are no special features and the episodes are not separated which means each disc is one long Chapter as opposed to 31, 50 minute episodes. I don't know why it was done this way. It is a bit of a let down. Needless to say the "Series" itself is absolutely well worth the money and I would certainly recommend it.

The Volumes are at a very good price now and you can also get the complete series as an import for a steal of a price. Recommended Highly.

Really enjoyed catching up with this series. The story and characters are great. Just a shame some digital editing could not take place. Maybe even some of the episodes could have been looked at some scenes removed. This would make no difference to the storyline. It would be in line with modern flow speed.

I remembered this program from my youth and thanks to the lovely people at Amozon I was able to re-live it all over again. Gemma Jones is brilliant and Christopher Casanove is gorgous!!! I think the earlier episodes are a little bit better than the later ones but over all I REALLY enjoyed it.

This is an outstanding series of films, and I now have the full set. Here is British acting at its best, and the costumes and interiors are period appropriate.
