Seminal martial arts movie which capitalised on Jackie Chan's overnight success in 'Snake In the Eagle's Shadow' and firmly heralded the arrival of a new genre, comedy-kung fu. Chan apparently contributed re-writes to much of the film, notably the hilarious climatic 'Eight Drunken Fairies' fight sequence. Wong Fei Hung (Chan) is sent to train under his Uncle, a wine-guzzling master famous for crippling his students. Desperate to escape this brutal teacher's regime Fei Hung runs away but is confronted and beaten senseless by a hired assassin (Hwang Jang Lee). Angry and ashamed Fei Hung is forced to return to his drunken master.

Though it wasn't Jackie Chan's first film, Drunken Master is the film that cemented his stardom. Jackie plays the rebellious son of a kung fu master. To teach Jackie the value of discipline, his father apprentices him to another master named So Hi, who has a unique "drunken" fighting style. Jackie chafes at So Hi's rigorous exercises and runs away--only to be brutally humiliated at the hands of a hired killer named Thunderleg. Chastened, Jackie becomes So Hi's devoted student. He soon discovers he will need everything he's learned when Thunderleg is hired to kill his father. In Drunken Master, Jackie is only beginning to cultivate his mixture of action and comedy; here the emphasis is on kung fu acrobatics, but the moves are astounding. Years before the likes of 'Rumble in the Bronx' and 'Who Am I?' ect... jackie chan was not only the greatest action star alive who performs all his own suicidle stunts but also the greater Kung Fu star since the days of Bruce Lee.'DRUNKEN MASTER' set new standards for the new kung fu genre is no longer the narrativer structure of a master out for revenge but now a slapstick comedy approach which chan pulls off with incredible genies and talent.His physical skills are unparrelleled any were in the world . It is 114 minutes of pure laughter and entertainment this is with out doubt a true gem and a performance from jackie chan to be treasured for ever , forget 'Rush Hour' this film is the true Jackie Chan. DRUNKEN MASTER has been much imitated but never equalled. (widescreen)

What can I say about Drunken Master? Well it is directed by Yuen Woo-Ping (Iron Monkey and Magificent Butcher) who has been influenced by his dad Yuen Sui Tein (who also stars as the Drunken Master) who use to take him to set of films which is where he gained all his film making knowledge. Yuen Woo-Ping directed Jackie Chan in Snake in the Eagles Shadow which is the film that made Jackie Chan the star he is today, so if you enjoyed Snake you will enjoy this. Drunken Master delivers on all levels for fight fans and Jackie fans as in action/comedy
It is pretty much the same cast from Snake Jackie Chan, Yuen Sui Tein and Hwang Jang lee, Hong Kong Action cinema fans will notice the supporting actors as they appear in so many other HK action films for example long time Bruce Lee friend Wa Mah Ching who stars in Fist of Fury as a japanese fighter with Bruce and also appears in tons of Sammo Hung films such as Spooky Encounters, The Prodigal Son and Heart of the Dragon.
Sorry for rabbiting on but the others reviews just tell you about how good Drunken Master is and they are all right buy this DVD. Apart from the film the DVD has a good number of extras but sadly no commentry from Bey Logan.
Just to add I love the Wong Fei Hung theme tune which you can hear in so many films and features in Drunken Master during the training scenes.

I have seen this film (which is probably the Greatest martial arts film ever) a billion times.
I recently decided to buy it on DVD as i have only ever owned it on VHS.
I found 3 very major flaws with this release.
a. The original english dubbing has been re-dubbed and some of the characters renamed. Where has Sam Seed gone?
b. To try and make the voices look more like the movement of the mouth (something that should never be done to a Kung Fu Film) they have changed parts of the script and tried to be too clever with extended phrases and speeches, losing a lot of the humour this movie is renound for.
c. Jackie Chan now has an English Accent (Honestly).
I have decided to replace my worn out VHS version with another VHS version, and am praying that thay have not done to the VHS, what they have done to the DVD.
I can see the reason for them doing this, but for the nearly £20 I payed for it, surley they should have the original english dubbing on the disc as an option, along with the new dubbing and of course the original version in Mandarin.

The much-imitated Drunken Master confirmed Jackie Chan newfound stardom after his breakthrough film Snake in the Eagle's Shadow when Hong Kong producers stopped trying to turn him into just another action hero in the Bruce Lee-wannabe mold and finally realised that his unique selling point was the combination of physical comedy with action. The plot's pretty basic - Chan's undisciplined young future folk hero Wong Fei-Hung has to learn `Drunken' kung fu to take on a killer - but it's just there to provide enough of a excuse to allow a comic action scene every reel or so, most of them wonderfully ingeniously choreographed and just great fun. It's not a deep film or a deathless masterpiece, even though it is almost perfectly directed by Yuen Woo-Ping: it's just a pure entertainment that manages to be purely entertaining in the very best way.

Sony's release doesn't have the plethora of extras from Hong Kong Legends' original UK released, but unlike that version is in the right widescreen ratio - 2.35:1 instead of HKL's 1.85:1. The opening fight is still cut due to negative damage and parts of the original Cantonese soundtrack are missing (replaced by the odd bit of English), but the film really benefits from being seen in the right ratio, showing off the stunts much more comfortably. The only real extra is a commentary from Ric Mayers and Jeff Yang carried over from Sony's Region 4 Astralian disc (which also included the similarly entertaining Snake in the Eagle's Shadow), but it's still the best version of the film itself available to date.

Excellent kung fu film from 70s which launched jackie chans early career in hong kong action cinema. excellent fights and story throughout the film, and funny aswell. Stars 7th dan tae kwon do expert hwang jang lee, who's martial arts skills are amazing. features good trailers of other jackie chan/hwang jang lee. Definetly a must for martial arts fans and jackie chan/ hwang jang lee and a quality classic kung fu film.
