Product Description

Product Description

This is Johnny Dowd's new record, 'A Drunkard's Masterpiece'. The songs, welded and mangled together, fondle every style from metal/weird country ('Infidelity/Gargon vs. the Unicorn') to jazz ('Random Thoughts') to instrumental funk ('Union of Idiots').
"I wanted to do an album that was a combination of variety show and soul revue. In the mix of styles, you can see my take on American music. Also, by running the songs together rather than having silence between them, I was trying to make the album as close as possible to our live show," says Dowd. "When we tour Europe in April and May, we will be performing the album in its entirety."
The band which includes Willie B (drums and bass pedals), Michael Stark (keyboards), and Kim Sherwood-Caso (vocals) is at the top of their game. "I think this album really shows the depth and breadth of what Willie B and Michael Stark can do musically as it is filtered through my somewhat warped consciousness."

Review

"A creative car crash of Americana, beatnik rock, poetry, prose, jazz rock, rap, screaming metal guitar, retro pop, spoken word and country noir." -- Mojo

"His band runs through everything from jazz...funk and, in one of the album's standout tracks, everything from psychedelic-sounding country to bludgeoning heavy metal" -- Classic Rock

"It's really quite brilliant, putting to shame artists half his age." -- Uncut

"This is great but I can't quite bring myself to award his "masterpiece" five." ****1/2
-- The Sun

"Who else but maybe Frank Zappa would do a song about "the sacred bond between audience and performer" and call it 'Union Of Idiots"? -- The Independent

Johnny Dowd - A Drunkard's Masterpiece (Munich Records),
We're big fans of Johnny Dowd, but his latest record, A Drunkard's Masterpiece, is causing some consternation here at Bangs Towers. Some seem to think that is makes a fine job of living up to its title, while others (me and the dog) aren't convinced. It's all very well bringing out a concept album with a fetching line in surrealist biblical imagery, but the strength of a Johnny Dowd record lies in Johnny himself, and there simply isn't enough of him here. Instead, a big chunk of vocal duties have been usurped by accomplice, Kim Sherwood-Caso, and I'm not so keen. 6/10.

Dowd returns to a more guitar-orientated sound with his 2008 release (including fleeting references to Hendrix and Deep Purple) as he once again scratches away at issues of sin and broken lives. The album is divided into three parts, headed "Everybody wants to go to heaven but nobody wants to die", "Putting lipstick on a pig", and "Thy shalt not covet thy neighbour's ass". Very good.
A caveat. You either love Johnny Dowd's work or you loathe it, there's no middle ground. But if you connect with his music there is a rich seam of recordings to tap into. Be warned though, this is not easy listening. He charts the darker side of life, love and the American dream, often with dark humour. The lyrics venture into territory no other song writer I know dares enter: just what is autobiographical and what is not is any listener's guess. On every album there are some tracks that work brilliantly, others that do not come off so well. But Dowd is never slick and he is never dull. And with an output of some 15 CDs in about as many years (taking into account his live releases) that is quite an achievement.

The one line comments from Mojo and Uncut are spot on. I picked this up with only an awareness of JD through listening to Jim White. My initial thought was...."What is this!" but before it was over I realised I'd found a gem. Look out for a very familiar riff in Opus 3.
