Think you've gotten all there is to get from Stone's "Stick Control" and Reed's "Syncopation"? Think again. Here, John Ramsey does his level best to convey the lessons learned from his time studying with a master player and educator. The lessons learned include creating and sticking to a disciplined daily routine that maintains, challenges and expands your technical ability - i.e. the Rudimental Ritual. Further lessons learned include how to suck the marrow out of classic texts, not stopping at merely playing the ink on the page verbatim, but delving deeply into them and using your creativity to apply them in ever more musical ways. The take home message? You may not need 100 new books to challenge yourself. You may simply need two old standbys and a whole lot of discipline and creativity to get the most out of your practice sessions. The irony is that you need to buy just one more book to see how it's done.

I have been looking for this book for quite a while, in fact since I read an article on part of Alan's teaching in Modern Drummer some years ago. There are some interesting exercises &,moreover, views on established drum books that show different ways to use these books. I have already applied some of the ideas over the years & passed on the ideas to some of my students. Anyone who has read the Jim Chapin book 1 & 2 will be familiar with some of the conceptions that Alan suggests. For example changing the written 8th note patterns to 8th note triplets. i.e. the 'jazz feel'. One can of course go much further & add H.H.& B.D. or add a clave with the foot.
The recordings of Alan reflecting on players & styles are interesting but could have benefited from a little editing maybe. The long gaps with the background noise do give one the feeling of authenticity. A very useful teaching tool & reference.
