Drobo 5N2: Network Attached Storage (NAS) 5-Bay Array, 2X Gigabit Ethernet Ports
The Drobo 5N2 is the Next Era of Simplified Storage for your connected home or small office. The latest generation Drobo 5 Bay NAS, the 5N2 delivers an unparalleled user experience for data sharing, secure backup, remote access and disaster recovery solutions. The Drobo 5N2 is faster than previous generations, provides a level of automation usually only found in more expensive solutions, and still preserves the award-winning simplicity found in all Drobos.
Not only is the Drobo 5N2 fast, but also easy-to-use, expandable, and automatically protects against hard drive failure. The 5N2 is perfect for storing large collections of photos, movies, music and documents. Integration with Apple Time Machine makes it an excellent way to back up all your Macs to a single device. It comes with port bonding support, also known as Adaptive Link Bonding, for link failover and link aggregation without Ethernet switch support delivering increased throughput and enhanced resilience. Supports myDrobo Platform and DroboAccess encrypted-end-to-end remote access, and DroboPix that allows secure and automatic uploads of mobile photos and videos. DroboApps support, including ElephantDrive, Resilio Sync, Koken, Plex and more.
DroboDR
What’s in the Box:

Leave Your Limitations Behind… Go BeyondRAID
Built on our award-winning BeyondRAID technology, the Drobo 5N2 protects your data without any intervention – even in the event of multiple drive failures. You can even switch from single to dual disk redundancy with a single click, ensuring enterprise-level dual parity data protection when required. Drobo’s with BeyondRAID are also self-healing and have virtual hot-spares. If a drive happens to fail, Drobo will automatically re-layout the data to return to a protected state without disruption.
Drobo takes the up front guess work out of determining the amount of capacity you require. Buy the capacity you need, and when you need more storage, simply replace your smallest drive with a larger one and immediately use that capacity in seconds. You can even mix and match drive brands, capacities and speeds.
To further enhance your experience, every Drobo comes with Smart Volume technology. Smart Volumes are thinly provisioned volumes that automatically utilise capacity as needed from a common pool of storage. Additionally, as data is deleted, free capacity is returned to that common pool, immediately increasing the available capacity.
BeyondRAID along with Smart Volumes deliver next-generation storage technology by bringing together enhanced data protection, reliability, expandability, and ease-of-use.

Designed with You in MindDrobo storage arrays have always been designed with the user in mind. From the tool less design that allows hard drives to be inserted without carriers or screws to the variable-speed cooling fan, the compact and quiet 5N2 was designed to work just as well on your desk as it does in an office environment. Users can also dim the lights and configure drives to spin down when not in use. |
All Your Stuff, Automatically SafeBuilt on award-winning BeyondRAID technology with single or dual-drive redundancy, Drobo 5N2 protects your data without any user interaction. Drives can be added or replaced on-the-fly for storage expansion with zero downtime. If you're running low on space, the lights on the front tell you what to do. Just add a drive in an empty slot or remove a smaller drive and replace it with a larger one. |
High-Speed Gigabit ConnectivityThe Drobo 5N2 is equipped with two high-speed Gigabit Ethernet ports and connects directly to your network to make sharing your data easy. Just plug it into any switch or wireless router and you're ready to go. You can even connect the Drobo 5N2 directly to the Ethernet port on your computer without having to configure any settings. Ethernet ports can be bonded together to dramatically increase performance whilst also providing network failure resiliency. |

SSD Acceleration Boosts Performance up to 10XMost storage arrays use either all hard drives or all SSDs. The Drobo 5N2 delivers some of the best of both worlds by intelligently combining hard drives and SSDs to deliver both capacity and performance. Using a small form-factor SSD boosts performance of popular applications. |
Do More with Popular AppsDrobo offers dozens of popular applications that extend the capabilities of the Drobo 5N2. Whether you want to stream media or backup to the cloud, DroboApps have you covered. Popular apps include, DroboAccess for remote access and sharing, ElephantDrive for cloud backup, and Plex for media serving and Resilio Sync. Seamless integration with Drobo Dashboard makes using DroboApps as simple as checking a box. |
Power Protecting Your Critical DataDrobo doesn’t just protect your critical data from drive failure, but also from power outages. The Drobo 5N2 includes a battery that protects all data – whether active or at rest. Should the power go out while using your Drobo, the battery will protect everything until the power is restored. The battery recharges automatically and is designed to last for the entire life of the product. |
The myDrobo Platform
The myDrobo platform extends the functionality of Drobo NAS devices by providing a secure and fully end-to-end encrypted path to selected Drobo Apps.
The DroboAccess iOS and Android app allows Drobo NAS owners to access their data anywhere, anytime through a secure and encrypted network. This allows Drobo consumers and SMBs to quickly and easily setup their own private cloud storage solution with the ability to view documents from a web browser or from the DroboAccess mobile app.
The DroboPix iOS and Android app allows owners to easily and automatically upload their photos and videos from mobile devices to a networked Drobo. The files are automatically uploaded over Wi-Fi and are securely backed up and protected on a Drobo.

Edited to add: now its fan is failing. Also, if you update one of the Drobo supplied apps with a newer version with security fixes direct from, for example Resilio, the Drobo keeps nagging you to back-level it. One more star removed.
New edit: Latest Dashboard version shows very explicitly what is wrong with its app version checking. Screen shot added which shows "new" version is older than "old" version.
And a newer edit: After one year, this Drobo has now gone into its notorious boot-loop problem. Because this device is a total black-box, there's no way to do any diagnostics on it at all. Also, because it uses a proprietary disk format, there's no way to recover any data. This is the most expensive paperweight I've ever bought. Absolute rubbish.

Drobo replaced the first unit (first time cost me £50 to courier it to them in Holland, second time free). Both replacements have also failed. The NAS is not fit for purpose. Will move to a different NAS vendor, probably Synology.
This was a speedier 5N2 replacement. Updated the firmware and then removed the entire 5 disk pack (16Tb) from older unit to this new one. And the solid-state cache drive too.
It just worked. Great.
How stuff like this should be. "It just works".
Loaded it with 3 x 8Tb red WD drives.
