Possibly one of the best goth records out there and the only decent album by The Cult before tgey went rawk... Dreamtime show the raw energy of the early goth / post punk scene. Raw drumming and guitars, grinding bass and Astbury's superb lyrics and voice. Features the classic Go West and Horse Nation.

With tribal drumming, lyrics heavily biased towards the native American experience, and guitars which sound like a mutant hybrid of Sergio Leone inspired twangs and bends, Johnny Marr and the Ramones, Dreamtime is nothing short of being the soundtrack to a Goth spaghetti western.

It's an incredibly inventive and original piece of work, one which invites you you to >LISTEN< to the music and experience the layers, a rarity in these more modern times where Rock music is all too often reduced to a one dimensional palette.

The Cult would of course follow Dreamtime with Love, an album showcasing a revamped sound and image, a mixture of heavy-psychedelic-goth, leading to a run of hit singles, in the wake of which Dreamtime was left to be quietly forgotten.

If you missed Dreamtime the first time around, give it a try today. It's a rewarding experience, sinking into the brain far more subtley than anything later released by the band. It's also presents more original of a soundscape than anything The Cult, and the vast majority of their peers, created or would go on to create.

Four stars.

There are so many good songs on this album. Horse Nation shows Astbury's (lead singer Ian) penchant for native Americans so prominent in later Album Ceremony.
Go West again deals with early American pioneers, Spiritwalker is another good track.
All in all there are many fine tracks none of which quite match up to their greatest track the famous and enigmatic She Sells Sanctuary (Love Album). Overall this is a better album than anything up till Sonic temple, which is a completely different sound and anything after that
interestingly the Audio Cassette (if you can find it) features on side B the entire Live at the Lyceum 1984 concert which has the encore (and best version) of the song Moya from their immediate previous incarnation - The Southern Death Cult.
The CD does NOT feature this concert

Great album this, good riffs, good rhythms. Riffs end before boredom (a criticism of the later 'Love') and what a pity Nige on the drums met such an untimely end. Shows great spirit this album, original, enthralling, uplifting - and well & truly set the boys on their way...
