I'm actually still reading this but am about 75% through it. HP Lovecraft is a most extraordinary writer, whose imagination seemingly knows no bounds. His worlds are weird and often threatening and this novel is no exception, set in a dream world with some extremely strange inhabitants. One thing he does not do is go into too much detail, leaving a lot to your own imagination, which helps with the atmosphere of uncertainty and danger.

4.0 out of 5 stars Required reading for fantasy lovers. 20 Feb. 2015

Great fun to read the overwrought, but remarkable prose that influenced many fantasy writers who followed. Made me want to know more about Lovecraft himself, to know a bit of what his fevered brain might have been like. (Spoiler) I found the ending an enormous letdown. My theory is that Lovecraft couldn't publish his "scary" prose without placating the upright society in which he lived.
