"Fresh, new and magical." -- Charles Spencer, "The Telegraph"

About the Author

August Strindberg (1849-1912) is best-known for his misogyny and as the author of Miss Julie (1889). His first success came as a novelist and autobiographer - his plays (and he wrote over sixty) were deeply controversial in their time and still are to some extent. They range from a bold naturalism (eg The Father, 1887) to an impenetrable expressionism (eg The Ghost Sonata, 1907). Caryl Churchill (1938-) is probably the most respected woman dramatist in the English-speaking world. She is the author of some twenty plays including Light Shining in Buckinghamshire, Cloud Nine, Top Girls, Serious Money, The Skriker, Blue Heart, Far Away and A Number - seen and admired all over the world. Most are published by NHB.

Be aware if buying this as a student, that this is not Strindbergs original play with a intro from Caryl Churchill, but a modern revision by Churchill. If you're looking for the actual play, find it elsewhere on Amazon as 'Six Plays: August Strindberg'

What was a beautiful play, with beautiful language, has been altered to a painful reconstruction that completely destroys the original script, taking any of the subtlety or grace of Strindberg's masterpiece. Avoid this like the plague.

I bought this book because I am doing a costume and set design for a production of this book. I like the play but it's a little bit confusing at the beginning but still interesting. I didn't put this down until I finished it but the story i not really my type. too dark and desperate for my taste. the quality is very nice too.
