This is a decent read, though why the author left out info about the female lead, which might have explained her awkwardness and ill-ease with the male lead, til around 56% of the tale gone, was puzzling. It was a thing that the leads had in common, and might have drawn them both together a lot quicker, so it is a bit mind-boggling, though by then we'd already seen that Sarah wasn't a very worldly female, despite being a modern romance writer.

Ok, so Sarah Carter is Mims Murphy, romance writer extraordinaire, who has women swooning over her romantic tales. She can't write an erotic love scene, just sensual ones, but readers love her anyway. In town to see her publisher, she meets the male cover model of her books, and thinks he's a few years younger than her. Uh-oh, here we go, 'Cougar' romance, I thought. But, though he turns out to be a decent enough type, she's made up her mind about him and dismisses him. He, Sage, is in fact the owner of a dude ranch, who does the modelling for money to help his business.

As she's writing a western romance and knows nothing of western life, Sarah signs herself up for 6 weeks on a dude-ranch, only to come face to face with Sage, aka Martin. She's still resentful of what she deems was Sage being cruel to her, but he's happy to have her on his ranch, under his rules.

So, that's the basis of their romance, which kind of wasn't the be-all-and-end-all of the tale, as we got told a lot about the other guests at the ranch, and their issues, and yes, some of it made for funny moments, and there was even a teen romance going on, but Sage and Sarah's romance...took its time.

It was very innocent, with love - not sex - scenes of the 'fade away' variety, but which seemed to suit the wounded woman the author made Sarah out to be.

Sarah a romance writer has signed up to stay on a ranch for research purposes for her book. When she arrives she realises that the ranch owner is the cover model she met at a photo shoot. At that meeting there had been an embarrassing incident in a coffe shop with him. That incident had left her with a poor impression of him, so she does not feel that she can stay. But having sprained her ankle after her hire car broke down on the journey to the ranch she is stuck.
This is a pleasant enough read. The storyline is okay. The characters are not very well developed which was a disappointment. Sarah the heroine seemd extremely unworldly for a woman of almost forty years old, she certainly had an awful lot of issues about herself, and was not confident at all. Sage the hero was a much more rounded character. I felt the story meandered off into other areas away from the two protangonists too often. The incident that so upset Sarah in the beginning of the story leaving her angry at Sage, was not that big of a deal, and Sarah's reaction was a bit OTT and not entirely believeable. The supporting characters were one dimentional, some of the scenes in this story were funny while others were a bit twee. This is a contemporary story, but it feels more like a period romance. I like it when a relationship builds gradually in a story, but it was a bit too slow here for my liking, although I did get that it was because the heroine had so many hang-ups. Not a bad read. But this has not inspired me enough to check out the other book available in this series.

•••I listened to the Audible Audio Edition of this book•••

The narrator was incredibly expressive and brought the story to life with all of the myriad emotions from each and every character! It was a really fun listen and I ended up listening to it all in one day! I just couldn't stop :) I will definitely read (or listen to) more books by this author and I will definitely be seeing what else this narrator has done so I can listen to her again :)

This series must be listened to (or read) in order. This is the first book. I can't wait to listen to (or read) Honey Kisses!

Mims is a famous romance novelist who is kind of sour on love. She believes in it for her characters... Just not a plain Jane like herself. Meeting the cover model Sage from her books sends her info a bit of a tailspin. Her editor and his joke on her just was not amusing! Now she can't write. Needing to finish her book, she books six long weeks at a dude ranch hoping to find real-life inspiration and insight into her modern chicklit western romance. Too bad Fate is conspiring against her! Will she make it to the ranch? Will she get her book written on time? Will she survive the lack of civilization?

Sage hates being a sex symbol. Too bad it pays the bills. What can he do? He has to make a living somehow to keep his ranch and all the land. How did Mims end up on his ranch as a dude? Is someone playing a joke on them? All he knows is that she intrigues him. Will they get along? Or will he lose a paying guest and a cover model job in one fell swoop? Will he win her over? Or send running back to the city?

***This series is suitable for adult listeners (or readers) who enjoy modern romance with chicklit overtones in a western setting filled with fun and second chances while learning to love again and move past tragedies of the past :)
