The book is prefaced by reviews by child readers, and they all agreed, as I do, that it is a gripping page-turner. ----The Spectator, November 26th 2011
A fine, darkling book which will charm and intrigue. Philip Womack --http://philipwomack.blogspot.co.uk/2013/01/the-dream-dealer-by-marita-phillips.html
CHILDREN'S BOOK OF THE MONTH MARCH 2013 BOOKS MONTHLY SAYS: This is a real gem - it crashes straight in to Finn's life at home, with real, believable conflict between him and his father, then at school, where he's the butt of everyone's jokes, treated like a leper, bullied and set upon. But somewhere else, there's a Dream Dealer who might latch onto Finn's distress and make some changes in his life... Superbly crafted, with accurate teenaged dialogue and angsts, pinpoint descriptions of useless teachers (my two younger children will vouch for this - they do exist and they shouldn't be teaching), pinpoint descriptions of teens bullying teens (same again) and a plot that has you hooked right from page one. This is a brilliant read, adults will love it as much as the 8-13 year-olds it's intended for. Marita has a real winner here, no hesitation in choosing it as my children's book of the month! Superb. --http://www.booksmonthly.co.uk/children.html

"I loved the Dream Dealer! It was a truly gripping book, full of suspense right until the end. It is filled with heroes and villains, and all the characters were vivid. I especially liked Finn."
Tom Slack: 11 years. Newark, US
"This is a unique story filled with unusual characters - wrinkly old men, dogs, children and I could almost taste the tempting ice cream. From the moment I opened the book, I couldn't put it down."

They loved Finn and were totally engrossed and excited when the children were lured towards the Dream Dealer's van to have their souls stolen. One child, who just happened to be the girl of a non-identical pair of twins, was so absorbed that, while we were reading the bit where Finn finally decided that he might try an ice-dream, she actually shouted out, "Don't Finn, don't!" I've never known such concentration and captivation in a story in all my 30 years of reading stories with children.
It also stimulated much class discussion. It gave us the opportunity to talk about Mother Nature - the power of nature and the balance within it and importance of caring for our environment. We talked about 'the soul' and what we thought it was. We touched on playground bullying and family values. We talked about the importance of being honest and open. The book was an invaluable source of discussion topics and even encouraged my less able pupils to read and join in with class debate. I hope there's a sequel on the way.
Your imagination will run riot as the world of reality wars with a fantastical mind-spinning story of hallucinatory ice- creams, earth-imps, mysterious strangers and jars of souls.
I read it cover to cover in one sitting- you'll be hooked till the last page!
I am recommending it to my nephews who are 11 and 13. Any age would enjoy it as you can see.
Gripping, well written, full of colour and charm. moral and fun. Great first book and looking forward to the next.
