Managed 802.11n Business-class 2.4GHz Wireless Access Point

The DrayTek Vigor AP-810 is a standalone wireless access point, ideal for adding wireless connectivity to an existing LAN, or for expanding the range of an existing wireless LAN by using the WDS features. It can also be used as part of the DrayTek managed wireless system (see details here). The AP-810 replaces our popular AP-800 model, adding full compatibility with our managed wireless platform.

Wireless Security & VLANs

The AP-810 features multiple levels of wireless security. Encryption using WEP, WPA, WPA2 (802.11i) is available you can also use the access control list (ACL) to specify the hardware addresses of clients which are permitted to connect (by MAC hardware address). Any unauthorised hardware is refused access.

For additional user authentication, you can activate 802.1x RADIUS (Remote Authentication Dial-in User Service) which allows you to centrally manage and store user names and passwords either within the AP-810 setup itself (thus not needing any external server) on an external radius server which can permit time limited, temporary or continuous access to your clients as required.

The Vigor AP-810 supports the 802.1q VLAN protocol so that if it is connected to an 802.1q enabled LAN, it can split tagged data (whether its different subnets or intended for different users) and broadcast each on its own SSID.

Central Management with DrayTek VigorACS

The DrayTek VigorAP 810 can be managed by the DrayTek VigorACS central management system - a cloud platform which can manage most DrayTek products - routers, wireless access points and Ethernet switches, giving you complete visibility and control of your DrayTek product estate, even without a DrayTek Vigor router on site.

The DrayTek VigorACS management system can be used to configure and provision DrayTek VigorAP access points, similarly to performing these actions through the VigorAP's web interface, with a familiar menu layout in the Configuration section of VigorACS.

Profiles for groups of access points can be provisioned in VigorACS by selecting a VigorACS network, then accessing Configuration > AP Profile to configure profiles and apply them selectively.

DrayTek's VigorACS management monitors the VigorAP 810, with a Dashboard view giving a central overview of the most important information from the VigorAP's current status.


Central Management with a DrayTek Router The VigorAP 810 can operate in standalone autonomous mode, but can also form part of a centrally managed wireless installation by adding a compatible DrayTek wireless controller such as the Vigor 2862 router. This enables you to centrally control, manage and administer multiple AP devices installed around your building/campus. Management also enables efficient usage of your wireless access point through load-balancing, whereby wireless clients are distributed across several access points to reduce congestion. The DrayTek router operating as the wireless controller can provision DrayTek VigorAP access points using the Central AP Management profiles configured on the router, with an option to Auto Provision - auto configuring newly installed VigorAP access points with the Auto Provisioning profile, upon initial connection to the DrayTek Vigor router's network.	Power-over-Ethernet The AP-810 supports PoE (Power over Ethernet) as standard (built-in) so if the AP-810 is connected to a PoE enabled Ethernet switch or PoE injector, you don't need any local power to the unit (power supply) - the AP-810 will take its power from the Ethernet cable. This is ideal for situations where you do not have mains power available in the exact location where you want to install the AP-810 or just for general aesthetic neatness, perhaps where the AP-810 is installed somewhere prominent.	Local Temperature Logging and Alarm As your VigorAP unit(s) will be distributed around your building, it's an ideal opportunity to also gather environmental information about those locations. By the addtition of an optional USB temperature sensor, your VigorAP 810 can report real-time local temperature information, show the previous 24 hour's chart and also set high/low alarms to alert/log if the temperature falls above or below your set levels. This facility is ideal for detecting if any part of your building is over or under-heated or if heating/cooling has been left on overnight and therefore helping to make more efficient use of your heating or cooling energy consumption, potentially saving cost. The VigorAP 810's USB interface can alternatively connect to a regular printer. This is ideal to provide printer access to wireless laptops but could also be used for installing a printer elsewhere in your home/office by using a pair of VigorAP 810s to make a bridge.

Cracking piece of kit now I've sussed the set-up

After reading reviews about the AP800, and asking our IT department who use draytek exclusively across 3 sites, I decided to take the plunge. I'm not an expert with PC's or networking by any stretch of the imagination, my preferred tool is a spanner, but generally with a head scratching and some online research I can get things done. I wanted the AP to act as a repeater for the sky router (netgear DG834GT) so we can connect tv and other devices in the lounge without cables running from the porch where the router sits.

First evening, tried to follow the quick start guide. Took advice from another review regarding a factory reset before I started. But after a couple of hours of trying I conceded defeated and packed up. I hadn't even managed to find the AP let alone get to the web configurator to set it up. It certainly wasn't on the default IP addres listed in the guide.

Second evening, I'd done a bit more research and read the user manual in detail. Had a bit more success this time by connecting the AP to the router via a network cable to one of the Lan A ports. Logged in to the main router for our house, switched off all unnecessary devices and found the IP of the AP. Logged in using the default username/password and proceeded to use the quick set-up wizard to get the AP up and running on wireless. Closer but no cigar.

Third eveing, yet more research and having joined the draytek user forum and read just about every post I could find mentioning AP800 I thought I had a fighting chance of more progress. There was a particularly good post from someone who'd had some advice direct from draytek user support. So, here's what worked for me.
1. Connect draytek ap800 to router using cable into a Lan A port of the AP.
2. Log in to admin panel of main router so I could see IP addresses of connected devices (for mine that's http://192.168.0.1). Also noted the SSID of the main router and it has DHCP enabled meaning the AP800 would probably not be using the default IP stated in the user manual.
3. After a factory reset of the AP, check main router for IP address of the AP (was 192.168.0.6) and log into AP web configurator.
4. Go to "operation mode" and check "Universal Repeater" and click OK. Wait for the changes to save.
5. Once saved, click "Wireless LAN (2.4GHz)" and then "AP Discovery" then "Scan".
6. Once scaned find the SSID of your main router in the list and check the button, then click the button "Select for Universal Repeater".
7. Match the security details with your main router and click OK.
8. Then click "online status" and all being well it'll show you the IP of the main router plus the AP and all will be green.
9. Disconnect network cable from between main router and AP, connect wirelessly to AP from my laptop (remembering to enter the correct passcode of the ack of the AP), enjoy moment of joy as everything works and then crack a beer to celebrate.

Hope those less technologically gifted or wise in the ways of computing, such as myself, will be saved a bit of frustration and wasted time. To be truthful I'd had a go at connecting this AP up almost a year ago and given up in a big sulk. So it lurked in a cupboard until I actually really needed to give it another go. Glad I persevered as the signal quality across the house is top notch now.

Botched oppportunity by Draytek

I will start by mentioning that I've been installing Draytek routers for at least a decade and a half and although they have their flaws they've all been good products.

This access point on the other hand is a totally botched golden opportunity for Draytek to match or beat Ubiquiti in this area. I had imagined that, having a suitable Draytek router already in place, with a WLAN profile established, adding a managed Draytek AP would be a simple job of logging in to the Vigor UI, adopting the AP and deploying the existing WLAN profiles to the AP as required.

No chance. It appears you've got to recreate your WLAN profiles again in the Managed AP section of the Vigor UI - and your existing WLAN on the Vigor itself is totally separate, the two don't work together at all in the way you'd expect of managed WiFi.

You can't even export managed WLAN profiles to a backup file and import them to another router - you'd have to back up and restore the entire router config which is a different thing altogether.

Time will tell how reliable the AP is - signal strength is nothing to write home about and installation is incredibly ugly due to the orientation of the RJ45 sockets etc; there's no PoE injector included (and the Vigor routers can't provide this - that would be neat, wouldn't it?) and to cap it all the power cable on the provided DC adaptor is uselessly short for a device designed to be wall mounted.

I certainly won't be buying another Draytek WAP any time soon - there's just no reason to when UniFi stuff is a comparable price and vastly quicker and neater to install.

Brilliant Wireless Extender from Draytek

This Access Point is trivially easy to set up and exceptionally good at what it does - which is to provide a signal booster for an internet router. Partnered with a Draytek router, it can connect either via Ethernet cable (Cat5 or later) or wirelessly. Setup is trivially easy via integrated wizard. All administration is via a very simple web interface. Excellent security and performance. Not the cheapest, but it simply doesn't get any better than this.
Plus Points:-
1. Properly secure - WPA2/PSK, white-listing, supports hidden SSIDs
2. Fast - exceptional performance over cable or wireless to a base station
3. Good strong signal, even in older properties with thick walls
4. Extremely easy to set up with the wizard - pick your operating mode, click through, you're done...
Minus Points
1. It's not the cheapest, but you absolutely get what you pay for.

If you need to boost a signal to get a better wireless connection, this is about as good as it gets.

These AP are fine once you can understand the settings and get familar with configuration. The Wifi Range is very good with lots of configuration settings like add virtual second LAN. I have had a lot of trouble initially setting a few of these up as they didn't discover the WIFI Access points close by but after a reset and a little patience, managed to sort it. I would say there is room for improvement, maybe a firmware update as the console of these is very slow to respond and sometimes hangs. not bad bit of kit though.

Been using Draytek components for a number of years now, they work perfectly. However, I do have a technical background and that probably helps as I would not recommend these products for someone who isn't used to configuring Access Points/Routers etc. My only gripe is the item came from a supplier in Germany, so didn't have a UK AC adapter, and the basic documentation was in German (understandably). For future reference I will check where the supplier is based before completing an order as no savings were.

In summary, I would definitely recommend this product.
