It's a cute book, it gives you some cool ideas and in the end it also gives you some insight about drawing in Photoshop. If you are absolutely new to drawing manga characters, though, I would not recommend it, since the jumps between explanations are rather big and it shows ideas more than explains different drawings.

I bought three of these books, one for a teenager who is hoping to get into graphic design and one each for two 11 year olds who love doodling. This book is a great beginner's guide as it takes you through the basics but includes some more detailed designs as well as a guide to creating mange drawings on your computer. It's so straightforward even I've managed to draw a Chibi version of my kid and my dog, and I'm completely hamfisted.

I've seen a couple of good manga/animation books by Christopher Hart for those who want more, but for the money this is brilliant value.

I got it for Christmas one year and take it out every so often to use it. The drawings are excellent, but I would reccommend chibi-fying some animals (such as the squirrel on the front cover) directly from photographs, but you can still use the tips provided. What I found particularly brilliant, however, was that my art teacher -who hates manga for some inexplicable reason I cannot fathom- was very impressed with the more detailed drawings, such as the 'Bake-Neko' -or 'Monster Cat'. These more detailed drawings are perfect for the developing artist who wants to draw that bit more realistically. This book is not just chibis! It is also highly informative, as it lets you know the Japanese and English names of many real and mythical animals, such as our friend the Kappa, Neko, and Kero, as well as the sounds they make in both languages (did you know that 'nyan' is Japanese for 'meow'?)!

My daughter is a young budding artist, who loves drawing 'cute' animals. I wanted a book that would explain the best way to draw such things without being too technical. This book did just that, it was very easy to follow. She has since started drawing non-stop.
