I bought this book for my 6-year-old daughter, who loves drawing and loves fairies and mermaids. However, despite being called 'How to draw Fairies and Mermaids' this is more of a sticker activity book than a 'how to draw' book. There are a few pages with step-by-step instructions for drawing, but most of the book is filled with ideas for painting, collage, and other craft projects. There is nothing wrong with that of course (and the sticker pages are nice) it's just not what I was expecting from a 'how to draw' book. This one will be going in the present cupboard and I'll have to look again for a book for my daughter.

My 5-year-old daughter made off with this book and "How To Draw Princesses and Ballerinas" while I was still unpacking my Amazon package. When I found her again, she was already on the floor with her coloured pencils, following the instructions for drawing.

I got these books because she draws all the time, but was getting very frustrated that her little fingers are not yet making pictures at Da Vinci standard, and she wouldn't listen when I told her it will come with time, and then the howling and tossing papers on the floor would begin......

This book (and its companion) break down how to draw figures into a few basic shapes and lines, using step-by-step pictures that my daughter has no problem following. The fairies and mermaids depicted range from the small and cute to the more tall and graceful in style. There are suggestions for using other media like foil pressed on a cheesegrater for mermaids' tails, paper dolls holding hands etc. that my daughter is also following up of her own accord. And in the centre are two pages of stickers for decorating the artworks with.

There have been no more thwarted artist tantrums since these books have arrived. Thank you, Usborne.

This is a super book for mermaid mad girls that also like to draw. This I s about getting the effect rather than perfect technique and ideal for youngsters starting to do their own drawings and stepping up from colouring books. Super!

For Eve (aka Evie-Pops) the world her adult relatives can't see is choc-a-bloc with fairies. And mermaids. And princesses. And ballerinas. Fortunately, it also contains quite a lot of paints, crayons and scrap A4 so the two books by Fiona Watt were inspired Christmas presents. The odd fairy (only 2D, alas) continues to emerge from the grandparental bookshelves, magazine racks and the backs of sofas - though they have yet to perform any magic with their obligatory wands, such as hoovering the carpets or fixing the washing-machine. The books break down their subjects' physiology into simple shapes that young children are able to copy and show them the body parts in their proper proportions. So the kids are learning to draw more generally - outside the specific imaginary characters. That done, there's a lot of fun in adding the fancy, frilly bits and in colouring them in. Stock up on pink and purple. By the day after Boxing Day, Eve, 8 year old Joe and their mother were running a F,M,P & B factory and were, by then, cutting out bits of scrap (we hoped) fabric and assembling collages - some of which will have to be kept, possibly for ever.

A whole lot of joy for very little expense. Also provides space for festive drinking.

The book arrived promptly but the bottom of the pages were glued together from being wet/damp before. I've returned the item and expect the credit will be sorted promptly too.
