Works like a charm
A good weight, easy swing feels strong, it chops wood, what more do you want. Time will tell. The height of the block you put the logs on to split is what determines your heft and how well the maul works.

I can only comment on using this axe for occasional use - I am not a professional lumberjack!

It arrived next day well packaged. It appears extremely well made and is heavy enough to be effective but not too heavily to whield easily. It made light work of a number of huge pieces of tree trunk I had and turned them into logs with no problem. The combination of weight and blade worked fantastically well.

I would recommend it highly. Despite buying splitting wedges I did not need the hammer element of the maul as the axe was so effective.

This is one of those products that seems to have gotten everything right. The balance is perfect, it is not too light or too heavy, the grip fits my hand perfectly and it is so easy to use it feels like an extension of your body. I wanted a Fiskars maul but thought it too expensive for my limited use and so picked the Draper and am glad I did, makes short work of huge lumps of wood with minimum effort. A highly recommended product.

Splitting logs for firewood is a routine task in our household as we collect large pieces of timber rather than ready split logs. So far, we have been using a traditional style axe for most logs and a log bomb / sledge hammer for the knotty and large ones that don't want to split.

This maul makes splitting logs a lot quicker. However, I would recommend a trick shown on Youtube to make the job far more efficient. Take an old tyre and attach it firmly to the top of a heavy chopping log using three pieces of timber. Stuff as many logs into the tyre as possible and swing away with the maul. Instead of the logs flying in all directions when split, they stay put. Plus, the larger area of logs makes it almost impossible to miss and if you do, the tyre absorbs the energy. It also makes it possible to get the logs into much smaller pieces.

I bought this for splitting logs. I previously used a heavy felling axe, but found the edge wore quickly. I have never used a fiberglass handle before, but I find this handle comfortable.

It splits logs of 30cm diameter quite well, without getting stuck, but it does require a bit of effort.

We have a wood burning stove and get wood logs from a local merchant. They arrive as just branches cut into 30cm - 35cm lengths and varying in diameter between 15cm - 20cm. The moisture content of the wood is usually between 15% to 25% when it arrives. To get an efficient burn from the stove, the wood needs to be split. This axe makes short work of splitting the wood.

I am no woodsman, but I am very pleased with this axe and have been using it for two seasons now. It is the first 'serious' axe I have owned; the handle is very sturdy and absorbs the vibration from the strike so you don't feel a jolt, the blade has maintained its sharpness so far without needing honing.

Just some tips from a novice: make sure the blade does not hit stones or other hard objects when working. Get some advise on how to use an axe from someone who knows - as with any tool, there is a PROPER way to use it - or at the very least, watch plenty of YouTube videos (as I did) and practice with small logs first - this is a seriously heavy axe and needs some strength and a proper way to strike. You don't need to be a bodybuilder, I'm certainly not, but what's important is the stance and the way you bring the axe down; the blade is weighted so it should do all the work. Have something really sturdy to place the logs for chopping on - I have an old tree stump that takes the knocks. Anyone that has used a little hand-held camping axe is in for a shock.

My only minor gripe with this axe is that the yellow plastic coating on the handle begins to look a little grubby after a while and is difficult to clean as stains don't come off easily.

Amazing are just needed the bloke that should have come with it but Amazing. Thank you.

Now that I know how to use this properly I absolutely love it!

Previous I had only used large axes to split logs so initially I was swinging this from behind my shoulder, way over my head and into (most of the time) the piece of wood on the chopping block. Due to the weight and the length of the shaft this was proving to be a bit tricky at times and didn't feel right at all.

Then I had a moment of clarity...

This Maul has some serious weight to it so I started lifting it just a couple of feet above the wood I'm about to cut. Even from 2 to 3 feet this thing smashes through the pieces of wood with the greatest of ease (I'm working on logs that are cut to about 10 inches in length). I now use this for breaking the logs into smaller pieces for burning or for turning into kindling using a small hand axe.

All in all this is a brilliant product and at under £30 it's a good price. The fibreglass handle is very strong and long so combine that with the weighty head and this thing breezes through wood. With that in mind though, and akcnowledging that this is a difficult thing to quantify - it may be a bit difficult for smaller people to use.

Makes short work of pre-cut logs that are too fat for our wood-burning stove. Needs a little bit of practice to consistently 'hit the mark', but all-in-all, a very useful and well-made Maul.
