This Draper soldering iron has reasonable build quality - certainly easily good enough for occasional or hobby use. For the first few minutes on first use, the iron produced some smoke from the heating element area. Presumably this is normal for a brand new iron. It hasn't done this on subsequent uses.

The iron was bought specifically to solder electrical connectors to heavy guage cables (cables capable of carrying over 60Amps). It heats up quickly from plugging in and heats the work to be soldered within a couple of seconds. The handle stays cool, although I haven't used it for prolonged periods. All-in-all a good product, especially considering the price.

A pity I have to give it one star !!

The iron heats up ok,then keeps going until the solder "sparks"on the tip (I kid you not).
The tip gets way too hot - there can't be any thermostat on the iron - until the element blows up,as happened on mine.

Sent it back for a refund - avoid this item !!

It's a pity because Draper have always provided me with quality (mechanical) tools, but they've got this one badly wrong.

Product is quick to get hot but does not seem to have a thermal switch and if left on gets too hot to solder items

Would not purchase another, it was good for doing a few little jobs i had kept aside but after a short while the tip burned itself out and the iron was useless.
It is almost asthough the iron is too hot for itself to handle!

Bought this for stained glass work, iron glows cherry red and gets way too hot, avoid this item at all costs.

A bit shared with this item.
Extremely powerful and hot - bit turns bright red after few minutes. can be quite damaging to user and surfaces if not used carefully.
Observed that the bit got corroded (a big groove in the metal) after the second use in standard conditions. Still allow soldering though.

The tips are disitegrating after initial switching on despite being "tinned " correctly. Will be contacting supplier for new tips. 100 watt voltage is obviously not suitable for tips that have been installed. Not able to use with students.
