With my old bypas secateurs there was a tendancy for the cutting blade to be forced away from the square edge non cutting blade if the stem or branch was a bit woody. Which meant that some times a clean cut was not obtained . For a 1/2" branch I would need two hands.
The Drapper ratchet action secateurs cut easily though woody branches upto 1/2" and even a bit more. The ratchet action comes into play if there is any resistance. Depending on the resistance you just sweeze the handles together a few times and with the ratchet action the branch is cut neatly through. On green wood there feels to be no resistance at all, 1/2" woody branches require a moderate squeeze. I am cutting down a large old ornamental tree and using the secateurs to cut up the smaller branches into bins so that I can take them to the tip. Probably the new secateurs have done as much cutting in the last few day as my old pair have been subjected to in the 5 years I've had them. So far not showing any wear at all. After about 4 hours cutting each day my hands aren't showing any wear and no aching either.
In theory anyway.
When they work, they work quite well.
The problem is, the plastic mechanism and bottom blade often slip and give way resulting in a contorted set of blades and a mangled twig.
I've gone back to my old sprung manual strength secateurs as these broke after just 3 weeks light workload.

If these lasted a bit longer it would have been a 5 star review. The plastic opposite the blade does wear away but for the money paid you can't expect everything. Read morePublished 19 days ago by Damian Evans
Very light in weight, but the ratchet mechanism makes them able to tackle more than you would expect without the effort. Inexpensive and easy to carry around. Read morePublished 19 days ago by Martin M
