I have used many types of ratchet secateurs but this remains my favourite. Many of the others (which all cost much more) are heavy and bulky but this one is light and fits the hand well. The ratchet action allows quite thick branches to be sliced through with very little effort. I have bought two of them because, many years hence when the first wears out, I may not be able to get a replacement. I should add that my first one was bought about 15 years ago!

We've been using these secateurs for several years under different names and they're excellent for general garden use, cutting twigs and branches up to an inch just as well as secateurs costing many times more. They're very light and easy to store and handle. Every 3 years or so the plastic anvil gets chewed up and we just order two more - his and hers!

Draper 34478 ratchet action secateur cuts through tough stems with ease. The ratchet action makes for really easy pruning.

Ordered from Amazon on the 4th Sept, arrived on 6th. Exactly as decribed. These were bought as replacements for a pair of aluminium bypass secateurs that I got from a garden centre at least five years ago, manf unknown. At first sight they look a bit flimsy being all plastic, except for the cutting blade. In practice they are just as sturdy as the old aluminium pair.

With my old bypas secateurs there was a tendancy for the cutting blade to be forced away from the square edge non cutting blade if the stem or branch was a bit woody. Which meant that some times a clean cut was not obtained . For a 1/2" branch I would need two hands.

The Drapper ratchet action secateurs cut easily though woody branches upto 1/2" and even a bit more. The ratchet action comes into play if there is any resistance. Depending on the resistance you just sweeze the handles together a few times and with the ratchet action the branch is cut neatly through. On green wood there feels to be no resistance at all, 1/2" woody branches require a moderate squeeze. I am cutting down a large old ornamental tree and using the secateurs to cut up the smaller branches into bins so that I can take them to the tip. Probably the new secateurs have done as much cutting in the last few day as my old pair have been subjected to in the 5 years I've had them. So far not showing any wear at all. After about 4 hours cutting each day my hands aren't showing any wear and no aching either.

When these secateurs arrived I was not impressed they seamed too light to be any good. But actually they are great the lightness means they can be used for hours without tiring the hand, the ratchet action is very good and will cut through tough thick stems ( with in reason of course ) I am very happy with them and to date three of my friends have bought them as a result of my experience, and all agree with my comments.

With arthritic fingers and wrists, I decided to try these ratchet mechanism secateurs. The idea being that small, incremental squeezes will cumulatively cut with ease through thicker, more stubborn twigs and branches.
    In theory anyway.
When they work, they work quite well.
The problem is, the plastic mechanism and bottom blade often slip and give way resulting in a contorted set of blades and a mangled twig.
I've gone back to my old sprung manual strength secateurs as these broke after just 3 weeks light workload.
    Avoid!

Excellent value and really do the job, handling surprisingly large branches for their size and weight.
