Using and reading this tread depth gauge really is simplicity itself. You seat the green 'base' against the main part fo the tyre tread, then gently push the guage until the 'spindle' parts is seated in the deep part of the 'tread block'.

It takes longer to read this review, than it does to actually use the guage and get an accurate reading.

Metal construction's strudy, a bit of a bargain price, so there's no reason for not having one of these really.

Simple to use and makes it easy to tell whether one side of the wheel is wearing more than the other

Handy little device that takes the guess work out of calculating the depth of tyre tread.

The scale (1.0mm to 26.0mm in 1 millimetre increments) is stamped in a spiral around the barrel. The minimum legal depth of 1.6mm is clearly marked.

It comes with a small piece of paper describing the law and how to use it (see my picture).

I am fairly fastidious when it comes to tools, I actively hunt out tools made in Europe, the US and Japan as I like to buy a tool that is built to last. I was unable to find any new tread depth gauges being made in Europe so I went for this Draper, thinking it would be imported. But no! It's proudly printed on the item that it's made in Sheffield, much to my surprise.

The tool itself does everything you need, the markings are etched/cut into the metal, so will not rub off. Clip is strong as is the whole unit. Some other models I have seen have a marking for the UK minimum tread depth, which would be nice but not essential. Very pleased with this after 6 months use, I have bought another to give to a friend.

This is a useful little tool for measuring tyre tread depth, either to make sure your own vehicle is legal, or perhaps to check how much tread is left on a vehicle you're planning to buy so you can budget for new tyres as part of the purchase.

It's a simple device: a small 'prong' inserted into the tread and a scale at the other end so you can accurately read off the remaining tread. Remember of course to check the tread both at the centre of the tyre and at the edge - as different vehicles will wear tyres differently depending on their configuration (and tyre pressures).

I'm running out of things to say: it's a simple tool that performs the job for which it was intended very well.

This neat little tool does what it says. It's small and lightweight, has a pen clip on it so that you can clip into your pocket when working in the garage, and save you from leaving it on the floor and loosing it, or worse, treading on it and breaking it.

Certainly a handy item to have in your toolbox or vehicle to use as part of your pre-ride checks or general maintenance. Saves from the guess work and estimation of how much tyre tread and legal mileage you have left, not to mention from a safety stand point of checking if your tyres are wearing abnormally.

But it seems a solid tool, for the weight and size. I'm not disappointed.

This is an easy to use and easy to read tire gauge, you just put the thin end into the tyre tread and push down until the green plastic part is against the wheel and take the reading from the top.

The minimum legal tread depth in the UK is 1.6mm but it is usually recommended that the tire is changed before it reaches this depth due to safety reasons a lot of manufactures recommend 3mm.

This gauge is an easy way to avoid fines for illegal tires and the fine can be up to £2500 and 3 penalty points on your licence. But it will also ensure the safety of you and your passengers because its always work checking the tyre depth before the winter road conditions set in!
