Dragonflight is the story of the people of PERN and their brave defenders the Dragonriders. Dragonriders are people who are telepathically linked to the dragon on which they ride and only a prividgled few are worthy. It is in particular a story about F'lar and his bronze dragon Mnementh and the new weyrwoman Lessa, who rides gold dragon Ramoth. Lessa is the last of an old line of a pure blood family, of Ruatha who was murdered by Fax. the book primarily centres on F'lars desire to be weyrleader, the changes that are affected when his bronze suceedds in flying Ramoth and the return of the deadly thread.
For 400 turns ~(years) no theread has fallen from the sky to devour any living organisim on Pern and many believe that this herald the end of years of fear and a normal life at last. But Threads do return but there is only one Weyr with 200 dragons left to defend the whole of Pern. Lessa discovers an old teaching ballad scored by a harper over 400 turns ago about how the 5 other weyrs on Pern suddently disappeared over night. Lessa then begins her historical Journey on ramoth back 400 turns to persuade the "Oldtimer" dragon riders to come into her future to fight Thread, and suceeds.
The abouve is a VERY general synopsis of the story, but believe me this is a story worth reading. I started halfway through the whole series called the MasterHarper of Pern and I have been hooked ever since. These are some of the best fantasy books ever written and I strongly urge anyone who comes across this review to read them all!!! :)

5.0 out of 5 stars So unique and dfferent it stole my heart 14 May 2005
By Dragon Quill - Published on
Format: Audio Cassette
So how does a book and an author become a personal obsession? Read these books, or indeed any of Anne McCaffery's dragon books, and you'll find out for yourself.

So what makes these books so good? They're unique. There's little or nothing in them that I've seen in other books and stories. The characters are unforgetable, and indeed so rememberable I once considered naming one of future my kids after one.

So, compared to other books, where does this one lie? It's a completely, totatly different type of story than the Lord of the Rings, yet, Anne McCaffery is the master if the sci-fi fantasy field just as Tolkien is of sheer fantasy. Just as Tolkien is fantasy king, so is McCaffery. But for the record: they are completely different books.

In sixth grade, when I first read these novels, I wrote a poem about them, all of them. And for the record, in one of the more recent additions, I cried for hours, it seemed. Don't miss out on the first two books you should read of this unbelievable tale of time, dragons, and love. After you read these two, you'll be forever hooked, forever a fan, because these books steal hearts.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pern is a world where I would choose to live. 9 May 1997

If you like a world where people are honest and you can talk to dragons this book is for you. Ms. McCaffery takes you on dragon wings through killer rain, dragon hatchings and rediscovery of technologies. I love this and all the "Pern" books
