A consummate piece of storytelling that is both gripping and entertaining. The book is at its best when it is on board its namesake, Draca, the old wooden sailing boat that is perhaps the key character in the book. The sailing scenes are as vivid and realistic as they are fascinating, one can sense the salty spray, smell the wild wind, feel the warmth of the sun and move with the motion of the ocean! (Sorry, couldn't resist that.)
Told from multiple points of view, some characters are stronger than others but the hero and heroine are engaging and sympathetic (I had some purely subjective issues with the way some of the women were written, but not enough to put me off or spoil the book.) Clever use of devices such as a found diary and excerpts from historical saga add to the richness of the narrative while the story cracks on at a rate of knots . Part ghost story, part love story, part war story, part family / viking saga, Draca is a skilfully and vibrantly written book, an easy read and a memorable tale that is well worth any reader’s time.
