There were times during this final series of Downton Abbey that I thought it was struggling just a little to maintain it's usual high standards. The final episode however was excellent and gave the whole series a lift. Full of memorable scenes such as Edith finally telling Mary just what she thought of her, Tom telling Mary in no uncertain terms what she really needed to hear and best of all the great Maggie Smith in an episode stealing moment with Mary. There were many more memorable scenes too but I don't want to spoil things for people yet to watch it.

For all that though I do think that it is the right time to end Downton Abbey. It is better to go out while so many viewers are fond of the show and there is just enough story left to be told in the Christmas special which really will be the final chapter. I can understand why some people take the Mickey out of it and it is very easy to parody the show but by and large this has been high quality TV and it will be missed.

The year long wait for the new Downton series always seems like an age, especially this year as we knew that it would be the last ever series. It seems perverse that such a successful series has had to end, however, as the incomparable Maggie Smith said, if you work it out I should be about 110 years old by now! A slight exaggeration, but you can see where she is coming from since Downton has run from about the time of the Titanic disaster in 1912 all the way to 1925.

The TV series has now finished in the UK. It was an absolute cracker and if you enjoyed the first five series of Downton, you are not going to be disappointed with the final series. As would be expected, there was a certain amount of tying up of loose ends, but not to an excessive extent. However we still have the Christmas Special show to air at the end of next month so everyone is waiting in suspense for the final conclusion. Incidentally this box set has been issued in time for the Christmas sales, but it does not include the Christmas Special, which is the last of Series 6, and indeed, the last Downton ever, which seems a bit silly really.

It is difficult to single out the outstanding performances in series 6 as all the regular players had significant roles. It was good to see Tom back, and others such as Mrs Patmore, The Bates, Barrow, and Daisy below stairs and, of course, all the Crawley family are in the thick of things. Maggie Smith, as the Dowager is very much in evidence and her priceless sarcasm includes many a memorable line. Overall, without dropping in any spoilers, there was romance, tragedy, blackmail, suspense, joy and sorrow. In other words exactly what you would expect from Downton!

as always, a great series. cant believe this is the final one. i now have the complete collection of downton abbey dvd's including all the 'extra' ones, so i am now going back to series one and will watch them all over again !

What a delightful series this has been - looking forward each year to yet another new series. But no more in the works from the genius, Mr. Fellowes. We both loved this series and marveled at how much work went on behind the scenes and the painstaking efforts to get the costumes, the automobiles - everything from that era - just right.

Sad to see it come to and end. Be sure to buy Downton Abbey: The Finale (DVD) if you haven't already. It brings the story to an end. Tip of the hat to all the actors that made the characters come to life.

A wonderfully satisfying final season to a fantastic show. Couldn't have asked for a better final season really! :)

NB Note that the Christmas episode, the Season Finale is not included in this set. If you just watch up to episode 8, it's still quite satisfying on its own and does feel quite complete, although the final Christmas episode (which is avaiable separately) is still worth a watch too.

I have noted that some of the reviews reflect a general tapering off of enthusiasm for this series. I have not found this to be the case as I greatly enjoyed season 6 of Downton Abbey. Taken as a whole, this is a marvelous TV series and well worth watching. Congratulations to all involved.
