How can anyone resist the achey sadness of Jeff Tweedy's vocals, mixed with the luch harmonies of the magnificent Jayhawks?! Those of you lucky enough to catch them touring together will treasure the memories, and should grab this album pronto. Wonderful alt-country, and with a fabulous version of the Faces' 'Glad and Sorry' which would bring a tear to the toughest cowboy's eyes. Still playing it years after it came out. Much better than 'Weird Tales', despite what the other review says!

There's something going on here, a group starting to mould and develop, some excellent country rock. But start with Weird Tales, a much better album. Or skip straight to the Jayhawks (Smile or Sound of Lies, or Hollywood Town Hall.) Or try Wilco, or Son Volt, Soul Asylum or Uncle Tupelo. But come back afterwards and give this one a listen.

4.0 out of 5 stars Stand out songs.. 13 Feb. 2013

As a Jayhawks fan, i just had to buy this album.
It's above average in my opinion, with a few stand out songs..and a few "album fillers".
Not a fan of the singer, but overall a good album.

4.0 out of 5 stars Jayhawks, Wilco, Run Westy Run and Soul Asylum Meet to Form Golden Smog 18 Nov. 2015
By By CJs Pirate - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Golden Smog was one of those mash up groups that never panned out. Unlike Travelling Wilburys of the time, Golden Smog didn't get the love or time on the air they deserved. Is it fun to listen to? You bet! Is it great to hear? Absolutely. Will it be on a radio station near you? When Hell freezes over. Down by the Old Mainstream is a laid-back, enjoyable listen. Put it on when you're putzing around and start smiling for no reason at all.

Featuring singers/songwriters and musicians from Jayhawks, Wilco, Run Westy Run, and Soul Asylum, this is what happens when a group of talented folks get together and put together some fun stuff. This will never be big and probably never be the most favorite thing in your library. It will, however, make you smile each time it rolls through the disc player.
5.0 out of 5 stars Better With Age! 17 Dec. 2015
By Donald E. Gilliland - Published on Amazon.com

I recall liking this album when it first came out, but not necessarily blown away, However, I've been listening to it again recently and I like it even better now. I'm not sure if the reason is that it's grown on me after all these years or I just have a whole new appreciation for these guys, but I'm totally digging this fantastic "supergroup" creation once again.

If you've read the other reviews or now the background of this band, I won't repeat all the familiar details. But suffice to say, if like me you've been a fan of the Jayhawks and Wilco, you're probably going to find this album is right up your musical alley. Songs like "Redheaded Stepchild" (from Soul Asylum's Dan Murphy!) "Won't Be Coming Home," and the stellar cover of Ronnie Laine's "Glad and Sorry," will stick in your head for days. Man, these guys should get together more often. Thankfully, there is nothing terribly serious or arty about Golden Smog's approach to this album. This is spirited music played with verve and fun.
