Dougal has a problem. It’s in his shed and worrying him so much he’s writing his will!

I loved meeting Dougal. He’s an absolute star. I did wonder whether my middle aged female identity was affecting my judgement but I’m convinced that Dougal Daley: It’s Not My Fault will appeal equally well to children in the 7-11 age group as it did to me, because Dougal says things that all children think and feel at some points in their lives.

I liked the variety of textual approach so that there is never too much text at once for readers of all abilities to get to grips with. There’s plenty of white space, super illustrations and a wide variety of fonts in the notes and messages from Dougal’s friends which mean there’s something for everyone. I do have a slight qualm about some notes in entirely upper case or random mixed case as that’s a pet issue for me when teaching children to write, because it is better to model the correct versions, but these aspects are well separated form the main text. The illustrations are perfectly in tune with the text so that they add an extra layer of enjoyment to the read.

The plot is brilliant. It’s exciting and interesting. The scrapes Dougal gets into will resonate with all children, from accidentally breaking things to getting into trouble at school and falling out with friends. Indeed, there are loads of themes that could help struggling children discuss their own issues such as death, friendships, bullying, school and family relationships. That’s not to say Dougal Daley: It’s Not My Fault is preachy or dull – far from it. The humour is wonderful, especially those moments around the dog.

Dougal himself is a triumph of a character. He is accident prone, funny and charming – even at his worst. I thought Dougal Daley really was a superhero!

There are only so many death threats a boy can receive before coming to the conclusion that it's time to write his will, plan his funeral and leave a list of murder suspects for the police, all while keeping a huge, deadly secret. There's a creature in his shed, and if his friends or family don't kill him first, there's every chance the creature will. And none of it is Dougal’s fault...

Mayhem abounds in this fast paced comic tale of family life. As Dougal blunders from mishap to catastrophe, his long suffering family are there blaming him, every step of the way. Dougal, Sibble (it's SYBIL) Mum and Dad are all hilariously recognisable, their relationships mirroring those happening right now in homes across the country.

Jackie Marchant’s wit is brought sharply into focus by Loretta Schauer’s illustrations and the use of different fonts for each character adds extra depth to their personalities. A gem of a book which is certain to have readers laughing out loud!

But don't just take my word for it; here's what some of my pupils had to say:

“I love this book. It's funny and there's football in it.” Year 5
“Sorry I disturbed quiet reading time, but it's just so funny!” Year 5
“Does the author know my sister? Sibble is just like her, she even has her hairy legs!” Year 5
“I need to stop flicking my hair so much in public.” Year 6

Dougal Daley: It's not my fault is a long list of catastrophic and chaotic things that happen in Dougal's life. Which OF COURSE are NOT his fault!

I'll begin by saying that this book made me laugh out loud! Not just little giggles but full on, wiping tears from my eyes, belly laughs. Dougal's enthusiasm and tendency for the overdramatic, combined with the efforts of his slightly crazy pets, result in cataclysmic errors that just seem to snowball! And unfortunately for Dougal, explaining to his parents how things came about is not one of his strong points... hence Dougal spending inordinate amounts of time being grounded! Oh but don't worry, Dougal doesn't need to leave the four walls of his bedroom in order to create chaos!!

If I had to use one word to describe this book it would be hilarious... but as I get to use more than one, I'll also use fun, action-packed, adventurous, slightly goofy and very easy to read. Dougal jumps off the page and pulls the reader into his adventures, so be prepared to laugh, cringe and wonder what on earth do Dougal's mother's culinary delights ( brown goo ) consist of!

Review on behalf of OBC Mini Reviewers ~Review by Amy-Lee~

This book, even though its not my usual kind of read had me in fits of laughter and really, how many kids write a will?! But i guess when a creature is after you you want to make sure your toys are going to the right people lol

In a typical boy style where nothing is ever his fault, Dougal is so over the top dramatic (like the boys in my class) i couldn’t help but laugh along with him. This book was fun to read and action packed from beginning to end

I loved the illustrations but then who doesn’t? It was like the doodles you see on comic books, there to add to the story as well as telling there own little one at the same time…… a picture can say a thousand words….. and these did :)
