5.0 out of 5 stars Doug Brown saved my life 30 Jun. 2010
By chim richalds - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Perfect Paperback
How can I explain all that Doug Brown has done for me? He's changed my life. Ten years ago, I was in a back alley, smoking meth, and Doug walked up, took the pipe from my hands and said, "I'll show you the way," then started doing handplants on the alley floor. And in the grace--the perfection--of his movements, I saw God for the first time in my life.

I've collected his signature bubble gum, deodorant, helmet, Nicorette, abstinence ring, kitty litter, and KY jelly, so of course I was at the front of the line to buy his new book. I was not disappointed. I had to take a break nearly every page to wipe the tears from my eyes--tears of laughter, joy, and heartbreak. Halfway through, Doug tells of how, during a skate tour through Mongolia, the natives believed he was their god, and worshipped him for three months until Doug had to boneless 360 his way out the jungle. Later, he writes of his trip to Jesus' tomb(it was then that he learned the holy ways of the fingerflip). Needless to say, this is an inspirational, heartwarming book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Doug Brown is an inspiration 13 Aug. 2011
By Chella - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Perfect Paperback Verified Purchase
I originally bought the book for my little brother when I heard about Doug and Skate Straight. When my brother was younger, he was into skateboarding, music, video games, the typical boy stuff. He was always a jokester, he could make anyone laugh. His smile was so big! He used to smile a lot. I miss that. Today, my brother is in bad ways. I've almost completely lost him. I bought the book in hopes of helping him find himself again. When I told him about the book he seemed very interested in reading it. He actually listened to everything that I told him about Doug and seemed really intrigued. When the book arrived, I read it first, because I also wanted to know more about Doug's story. I feel that Doug's journey is an inspiration to kids everywhere and even for adults. Learning to stay true to yourself and avoid temptation so that you can do what makes you happy and be successful is something we all should aspire to do. Thumbs up Doug :)

5.0 out of 5 stars Makes ya think 14 Oct. 2010
By Buckeye in Oregon - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Perfect Paperback
Let me start by saying that I have no interest in skateboarding, but I think this is an excellent book. I found it to be very genuine and thoughtful. While reading Doug's story, you find yourself thinking about your own life. I found myself looking back on life- the ups and the downs- and while his experiences were much different than mine, they were still easy to relate to. And although some of his experiences were very extreme and rare, they provoked a lot of thought. He has been down a rough road and came through with an incredible amount of strength and wisdom. As a prevention professional, I found that Doug shows tremendous resiliency and is a great role model for young people.
I highly recommend this book for anyone of any age. It's an easy read that will make you stop and think about your life, realize what you have to be thankful for, and know that despite hard times, you can overcome your obstacles.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fab Read 2 Dec. 2010
By Sinderella_jewels - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Perfect Paperback
Having just received my copy of Beyond The Board I found it very hard to put it down, not only as a autobiography but to learning about a program that help kids. I have to be honest i knew of Doug's career before reading the book. BUT this was a total insite to what he does and how Skate Straight works. This is a MUST BUY for any Doug Brown or Skate Board fan. In reference to the doug bown is a hoax that is Certainly not true, you only need take a look at his profession website and you will see that the book compliments in detail to a T and helps fans understand why he does what he does and who he is as a person.
Highly recommended buy

5.0 out of 5 stars Must read--for everyone. 15 Oct. 2010
By Stephanie Scott - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Perfect Paperback
Doug Brown: Beyond the Board interested me partially because I love to read memoirs and autobiographies, but for personal reasons as well. Having a little brother who skated as an outlet and living under the veil of death, addictions, and recovery drew me to learn more about the Skate Straight program. I learned of what Doug Brown does before I read this and found out who he IS. To find out in the first few pages that I could connect with the author made this a book I'll definitely read more than once. I recommend to anyone who has had to find out who they are [or who is still searching] and overcome tough circumstances.
