This is the second of Cindy Blackburn's Cue-ball Mysteries series, and in my view even better than the first. The plot is full of red herrings - vital in a whodunnit - alternately hilarious and scary, and written with a sharp wit and a great feel for characterisation. The heroine's a writer of "borderline porn" (not really - that's just what a creepy journalist called her) with a talent for accidentally getting involved in other people's murders. Add to that a nauseating ex-husband and a gorgeous, intelligent and sexy detective "beau", two amazing girlfriends and a very perceptive cat, and you have all the ingredients for a very enjoyable read, plus the challenge of trying to work out who actually killed whom. I was fooled right up to the denouement, & I'm not usually slow to spot a baddie. Do treat yourself, you won't regret it!

Captain Wilson Rye is investigating two recent deaths and needs a pool hustler to go undercover to get more information for him in a local bar, The Wade on Inn, since it was the last spot both the victims were seen. His problem is there isn't anyone on the force who can play well enough to pull it off so he asks his his girlfriend, Jessie, if she will do it. Jessie is now a romance writer but used to be a very, very good pool player making her perfect for Rye's operation. He really hated to ask her but had no other options. Jessie agrees to do this for him but undergoes a complete makeover so if she sees someone from her past they won't recognize her.

This story started out pretty funny but as it went on the humor just didn't work. One thing I found ridiculous was Jessie talking to her cat as though she expected it to take her side on whatever the issue was. It was a good mystery though. Everybody had their own idea of who the murderer was and why they thought so. I couldn't connect with Jessie but loved the secondary characters of her mom and friends, Karen and Candy.

Throughout this story we would suddenly get parts of the novel Jessie was writing. This was confusing. I kept trying to figure out how it fit into the story and who the characters were. I couldn't place them. I never did figure out why Jessie's novel kept showing up.

I wasn't sure if I was going to like this when I started it. The first sentence introduces a character with such a corny name, and the lead character is writing a story that is positively cringe-worthy! However I have to confess that I enjoyed the book – it will never compete with Sherlock Holmes or Poirot or Miss Marple but it has a reasonable plot, some well-written scenes and dialogues, and a plausible ending.
I didn't wrack my brains thinking whodunnit, but it kept me interested! Five stars for enjoyment.

This sounded like my sort of book. I kept persevering because of that. I gave up halfway through because I was having to go back to x-ray each time I picked my Kindle up. The book would be a lot better with being reduced and with there being fewer characters - or perhaps make them real enough so the reader can remember who they are. On a positive side, the writing style was good and often humourous, typos were rare enough not to detract from the stor(ies), I enjoyed learning (finally) a bit more about Pool. I'd like to give it more stars but would have preferred not to feel the read to give up on the book. Perhaps sit on the beach and read it in one go?

I am really enjoying this series. I love the crazy romances the central character writes, I love that same character's banter with friends and lovers. Reading these books provides just the right amount of relaxed interest and enjoyment. On to the next one!

This book is great fun with crazy (in a nice way) characters. I love the humour, sharp and witty.

Will Jessie (Tessie when she is in disguise) be able to help - with the aid of her two best friends and as a last resort her Mum! - her beau Wilson (who is a cop) solve the murders?

Enjoyable book.

One of those books that keeps you hooked, absolutely brilliant, so funny, yet at times very moving but always hard to put down.
