When a US senator turns up dead with his throat slit, retired CIA operative Paul Shepherdson (Richard Gere) is sure it bears the mark of infamous Soviet assassin Cassius. The only problem is that Cassius was thought to have been killed years ago. Forced back into service, Paul is teamed with a hotshot FBI agent Ben Geary (Topher Grace) who believes that Cassius has been active all this time. As the pair get closer to the shocking truth, Shepherdson is forced to re-examine everything he thought he knew, in this edge of your seat espionage thriller.

The ending was a surprise to me. Usually, like everyone else, I figure these things out before but not this time. So kudos to the movie makers (also to Moyer for creating a truly creepy imprisoned spy, then again, as a serial Vampire in True Blood he's had a lot of practice at this sort of thing, still, nicely done).
Gere and Grace always a treat to see on the big screen, watchable actors that always deliver a good performance whether in a drama or a romcom. I would have liked to have seen more of Martin Sheen in this movie as he seems to excel in whatever role is thrown at him and manages to create a very sympathetic character no matter what, even if he is in a movie only briefly - that man has presence.
In conclusion, I quite liked the movie, the twist at the end and credit the actors for having done a very good job at creating interest in a plot which would otherwise have been an average effort.
The story is about an assassin who's party trick is to slit throats, but now believed to have now been killed. However bodies keep turning up with throats that look like donna kebabs. Is the assassin back? Bring in an FBI agent and an retired field man, Richard Gere to hunt the killer down in search for the shady truth. For the most part the film is faily steady but it has some half decent action scenes, especially towards the end. Gere puts in an admirable performance with a bit of a loose cannon edge. His FBI rookie played by Grizzly Adams (not really its Topher Grace. Never heard of him either) is ok and does not annoy as most actors like this do all to often.
It advertises the film on the front of the DVD cover as "from the writers of WANTED and 2 FAST 2 FURIOUS". Both crap films and for stupid people. The Double is at least half a grown up story, or tried it's very best to be. Remember The Jackal starring Bruce Willis and Richard Gere? I really like that movie. Well,The Double follows along simalar lines to that so if you liked The Jackal, you should like The Double.
The main reason I decided to buy this DVD was because I had just watched Arbitrage with Richard Gere which was great. Take my advice and order both movies, and overall you won't be disappointed.
You rather have to turn your brain off to be able to enjoy this - FBI investigations don't work that way, cut throats don't work that way, null hypothesis and logic doesn't work that way (the investigators try and prove a hypothesis just by failing to find evidence for the null hypothesis). But the performances are fine, the direction is competent, and the production values are decent.
All in all, this is watchable.
