HOOKER JOHN LEE

Amazon.co.uk

This set of 1953 sessions consists of lesser-known John Lee Hooker material, but it's none the worse for that; Don't Turn Me from Your Door is as fine an indication as any (as if any were needed) that Hooker is one of the greats. For the most part, it's just the man and his guitar, but really, no more is needed; between his solid feel for rhythm, his clear, expressive guitar work, and his more-than-serviceable vocals, Hooker doesn't need any help. He's a master of setting a mood, whether it's the intimacy of "Stuttering Blues," the sweetness of "Wobbling Baby," or the lamentation of "My Baby Don't Love Me," and he's so subtle that most of the time you don't even notice him doing it. Okay, so "Boogie Chillen" isn't on this album. Doesn't matter. --Genevieve Williams

THE DEFINITIVE JOHN LEE HOOKER - THIS RECORDING HAS BEEN IN AND OUT OF MY COLLECTION SINCE THE 60'S - WITHOUT ANY DOUBT THE MOST UPLIFTING, DOWNBEAT YET SOULFUL SET OF RECORDINGS BY THE MAN - ITS HOOKER AT HIS STRIPPED-DOWN BEST - JUST LISTEN TO "STUTTERING BLUES" AND YOU'RE "HOOKED!"

The great bluesman John Lee Hooker(1917? - 2001) made records for well over 50 years and Miles Davis once said he was "the funkiest man alive."
There's plenty of evidence for that on this overlooked album recorded by Henry Stone in 1953 & 1961 in Cincinnati and Miami respectively.
The 16 stunning tracks(including two instrumentals) feature Hooker(vocals & guitar) with, on some tracks, Eddie Kirkland(vocals & guitar) and an unknown bassist.
The music is primal, menacing and mesmerising and 'Don't Turn Me From Your Door' is a superb John Lee Hooker album that deserves to be much better known.

HASH(0x8b4a1a50) out of 5 stars This is real music 5 Jan. 2006

I don't care what kind of music you listen to, you need this album. It's so raw and emotional. This is one of the best albums Hooker recorded (trust me I have spent a lot of money on Hooker albums that were either cheap collections or of bad quality). This is the real deal. It is the album that relates blues to every other kind of music out there. I would hurry before this album is unavalible.

I just bought this and I am so glad I did. I had never even heard of this release before but I agree with the other reviewers that this is phenomenal. Great sound too. If you are even marginally interested in John lee Hooker, this is a must have.

HASH(0x8b4945ac) out of 5 stars A great collection from one of the best! 25 April 2008

John Lee Hooker's music has left a mark in the music world. When he died in 2001, the entire world mourned his loss. He was an icon to the blues world, and more importantly, the music world.

This collection of songs taken from various sessions in 1953 is a great compilation. And, it's just Hooker and an electric guitar. Nothing else.

And, that makes for an enjoyable compilation of songs. 'My Baby Put Me Down,' 'Stuttering Blues,' 'Don't Turn Me From Your Door' and 'Blue Monday' are among his best sides ever recorded, and are some of the few he recorded under the Atco (now owned by Atlantic) label.

Overall, if you like John Lee Hooker like I do, than you'll love this compilation of some of his best. It's 16 flawless songs from one of the blues masters.

Highly recommended for any John Lee Hooker fan. A flawless CD. ENJOY!!!

HASH(0x8b5b2ac8) out of 5 stars Powerful 13 Jun. 1998

This was the first blues album I ever bought. I was hypnotized by his growling vocal style and his "too bummed out to tune my guitar" playing. This feels like the real thing.
