This is the first in a series about Bernice O' Hanlon, a complex character, dealing with the highs and lows of living as a Witch in Glasgow. Bernice is not only a Witch with skeletons in her closet, she has an addictive personality and struggles with relationships too. And coupled with inaccurate spell-casting as the result of too much wine; we have a recipe for all kinds of magical mishaps...
Relying on the help of long-suffering friend Maggie, Bernice attempts to patch her life together and make some sense out of it. It's a story of struggles and coming to terms with a past wrought with family trauma and dark secrets.
This is one of those books for reading in transit.. short chapters and a fast-paced storyline with every sort of twist and turn to keep the reader guessing.
Confusing? Yes, but then what do you expect with an air head like Bernice?!
Down to earth? Absolutely. How could a story with a bunch of hardy Glaswegians in it, not be?
Whatever the future holds for Bernice, it probably won't be simple...
An enjoyable read and worth looking out for part two!

This is the tale of Bernice, a complex practising witch in contemporary Glasgow – the first in what promises to be an exciting series, aimed at an adult audience. We follow the path Bernice travels through life and memory, as she seeks to align mistakes of the past with ways of coming to terms with them in the present, in order to bringing healing forward into the future. In an expressively imaginative world of fiction, inspired by an ancient approach to spirituality, Cathie Devitt invokes a tactile and colourful world expressed in striking images: the sea, coffee-like at one extreme, inky at the other in the beginning recurs as a metaphor for all that is both paradoxically healing and fatal, for instance. The novel has all the mysterious allure and dangerous destructive power of a sleeping tornado – it hits you when and where you least expect it. Matching masterful artistry in terms of the craft of writing with hard-to-pin-down magic, Cathie Devitt weaves her words like a binding spell, bringing the words to life in you.

With a cat called Hex and a silver pentacle round her neck, it’s clear from the start that Bernice is deeply in tune with the magical. Despite her witchiness, (or maybe because of it), she lives and loves with the best of them in the city of Glasgow, where she has fled from her birthplace, on the west coast of Scotland. The characters in the book range through all shades of good, bad and ugly, keeping the pace lively, the action being interspersed with Bernice’s sadness at the loss of a baby, which goes some way to illuminate the complexities of her relationships. She’s a complicated character, but one I enjoyed travelling with on her journey back to the beach, where it all began.

Thoroughly enjoyed this book....entertained me from start to finish and I'm fussy about what I read. If it doesn't grab my attention two chapters in, I throw it away. Really looking forward to the next book!
