Product Description

The critic Robert McPhillips has described Donald Justice as 'one of the pre-eminent American lyric poets of his generation', and in this 30,000 word interview - the longest and most revealing he has ever given - Justice speaks in great detail about his upbringing in Depression years Miami, his education - at the University of Miami (where he studied Music under the composer Carl Ruggles), The University of N. Carolina, Chapel Hill, Stanford University (where he got to know Yvor Winters), and, most importantly, The University of Iowa's Writer's Workshop (where he studied under Robert Lowell, John Berryman and Karl Shapiro. Justice talks affectionately, though not always uncritically, about his former teachers, and answers at length a great many questions about his work, in all its forms (i.e. his poetry, his criticism, his prose, his drama, his music and his recent and successful forays into the visual arts. As well as the interview, the book contains a career sketch, a comprehensive bibliography and several pages of quotations from reviewers and critics, spanning the whole of Justice's career, from 1958 to the present day.
